Squad numbers

The fact that Willock has 7 seems to spell the end for Hanlan. 9 vacant does point to a first choice signing possibly all other signings are being held up so Evan's has a better chance of getting the player he wants .Meaning a minimum of 17 senior players plus Walsh,Woods and Bancroft. Any money left will be spread as thinly as he can to get those extra few squad players.

Evans clearly said that he doesn't want any squad players this term.
He will only sign players who can make the first team and contribute.
The days of hiring players to make up the squad numbers are long gone.
We have the smallest budget in the division, don't ya know !

He will first a foremost want a goalscorer. Even if that takes up the vast majority of the remaining budget. Then with whatever left your are limited to try to get the best player/s he can .Of course nobody will be signed as a squad player but given that he probably has ten of his first eleven most regular picks already the others will have to fight their way into the side.
The fact is if you have say a 18 man squad some players will play less than others they are squad players.

It’s a much shortened season chris, with many midweek games.
Everyone will need to play regularly or they will be burnt out by Xmas.
That’s why he’s signed players who play in numerous positions.

Walsh is a senior player

Wage wise I doubt that. Experience wise I don't think so.If Evans doesn't use him this season it would be hard for him to get another club.Experienced players have played regularly in the first team at some point in their career. Joe Walsh has made 3 appearances.None in the league, the FA cup or league cup.Not even at a lower level. If he goes out on loan.this season he will get much.needed experience. Otherwise he is a inexperienced teenage.Henry Woods and Bancroft have a far better chance of getting league games for Gillingham this season.

He isn't going out on loan this season
But do you still insist he is experienced? The only things he is experienced at is youth team football and sitting on his bum on match days.If this season pans out the same for him I fear he will go the same way as Hadler in a few years.

Hadler hasn't done much since he moved to to suggest he should have been challenging to be our number one.

Walsh got a number as anyone who is sitting on the subs bench is required to have one and he'll spend most of the season on it. The rest of the youths probably have numbers pencilled in but will only be officially registered once called up for the "Premier League U23 Development" cup.
