Squad: June 2024

Wonderful Rothman's. I've still got a few, the Wisden of football. I wonder if they still publish them.
Yes, they do.

Its now called The Utilita Football Yearbook, and the 2023/24 one is published the beginning of August. I have mine on advance order from Amazon.

Its had various names since it stopped being Rothmans. Incredible books in my view. I have them going back to the late 70s, and often dig them out for memory retention purposes. :)

I think the first Rothmans cost 18/- (90p) in 1970. By 1976 it was £2-50.
Yes - 18 shillings for the first one (1970/71). I've got them all from that first one up to 2001/02 (£18.99) when I went non-league.

Started buying them again from 2017/18 after I returned to the fold.

It will be interesting to see what happens regarding wingbacks.

We now have just one left - Jay Benn - and there will be serious doubts over his suitability for L1.

Duffy and Hackett have been used as wingbacks, but neither really is one.

So - will there be an influx of wingbacks or is this a sign that we are to play without them?

Haven't got any full backs either, so be interesting to see what position the first one to sign plays.

Left side
Reeco did pretty well post-jan in the attacking wingback role. But we had a long run of easier games. My guess, it will depend on whether we play the same 3-5-2, and in how many games we intend to dominate possession.
Ideally we bring in a more defensive wingback/full back for the option to switch tactics where necessary, for example as the more difficult opponents emerge. A player the very least pushing for a start more than brown/Burroughs. Or, Roughan could do that job if it is only needed occasionally (means switching the cbs though)
Right side
Needs serious attention, and probably 2 signings imo - unless one of benn/ahui has a brilliant pre-season

We did fantastically last season to finish were we did. Mostly playing with stop gap full backs/wing backs.
Obviously the Sorrensen conversion from Midfielder worked brilliantly.
But on the left Roughan tended to struggle a bit when he had to play there and we really need him playing full time left side centre back.
Reeco and Duffy did OK when called upon to play there. Brown was obviously bought in to play that position but was a failure for us.
Depending on the system that Skoobs wants to play I think it's important that we bring in fullbacks/ wing backs who are specialists in those positions.
But like everything with the Imps are budget may not be enough to cover bringing those players in. Still early in transfer window. But I think the players are back training now so ideally we would want to get these players in soon to get them integrated into the squad.

Correct my own error players back in training from this Friday according to the Skubala interview.

I'm sure it's all in hand, but we need to avoid having players in other than their best position. Some are more versatile than others of course. Once injuries kick in it becomes unavoidable to some extent but as had been said we need to start the season with all the round pegs in all the round holes. For instance Reeco did well when called upon, but his strength lies in attack. We now know Sean's best position, and it's not wing back. How long did we have Bishop on the books, and how often was he played in his most effective role? OK I should add when available.
Full/wing back positions are now the priority signings. Lasse gone, TJ gone, Brown (we can do better) gone, Burroughs, gone.
I'm sure it's all in hand.

City post a couple of pictures on first day back in and immediately two faces I didn’t recognise. On closer inspection must be Ahiu & Kamson-Kamara

A couple of unknowns at this level to potentially add are Zane & MJ. Zane potentially going to Spain preseason & possibly MJ too. Did notice on the photos from Fridays testing that MJ has put on quite a bit of size/muscle.
Zane is a very exciting prospect but untested at this level

Perhaps they are not sure whether or not to offer him a pro deal - pre-season may be a good time to assess him. I'm sure he will get some game time at least.

Interesting that Huddersfield played three different elevens yesterday at Emley, indicating that they already have a far larger squad than us.

Zane is only about to enter the 2nd year of his scholarship so no mad rush from the club's point of view.
He stands out for the 18s but will be really interesting to see how he is at the next step up. Pretty sure he'll get mins for the first team preseason & possibly in cup games too.
Huddersfield are financially at a completely different level yo us unfortunately but that's the harsh reality!
We have really grounded owners who'll never compromise us as a club which I'm more than happy with!
