Squad: June 2024

I don’t see Eyoma pushing on from where he is now unfortunately; he never let us down, but has limitations, so if we want to challenge next year he needs to be offloaded.

I’d be very happy if TJ is offered a new contract.
He’s reliable and by all accounts shows leadership amongst the group.
Simply lost his place due to the run.
Can also play RB in a four.
Given that we’re unlikely to have 22 senior players, his versatility is a blessing. I expect he”ll not be short of offers elsewhere.

IMO there could be as much as 10 out of that list that could be released, sold, moved on. If we are going to improve the previous 2 years summer recruitment,we need to be ruthless in making the necessary room in the squad.

Long, Benn, Bishop, Montsma, Ahui, Smith, Brown, Walker would be my preference.

Certainly need more depth and experience in the squad. Cant afford to be putting square pegs in round holes and using inexperienced youngsters if we are serious about competing next season. Will be a stronger league next season.

When will we make our first signing?

Jez intimated that Scooby wants his key signings in the building sooner than later.

In previous years:

2023:
First (permanent) signing was Alistair Smith on 12 June.

2022:
Paudie O'Connor on 13 June.

2021 (Covid restrictions plus Michael Appleton's diagnosis):
Lewis Fiorini on loan on 2 July.
Chris Maguire permanent on 7 July.

2020 (Covid restrictions and uncertain budget):
James Jones on 6 July.

2019:
Joe Morrell on loan on 27 June.
Jack Payne permanent on 3 July.

2018:
Bruno Andrade on 24 May.

2017:
Sean Long on 29 May
(disingenuity alert: this is the date when Lincoln confirmed they had taken over Long's contract from Reading)
Matt Green and Ollie Palmer permanent on 26 June.

Actually, this post means absolutely nothing.

Sorry, I appear to have wasted two minutes of your time.

Totally agree, I reckon probably at least 8 out or even 10 as you say and a similar number in especially if we can make a decent sale or two.

The thing that strikes me about the current squad is (even allowing for some players having gone and come back) we are getting some continuity which isn't always seen at L1 and that is a good thing surely?

Sorensen, Jackson, Roughan, Montsma🤞, McG and Walker (even House to some extent) all date back to Appleton at least.

Would still expect Smith and Brown to move on, and fear losing one of Lasse or Lukas, but even at this early stage you can really see the spine of a starting 11. It's a massive question mark, but by all that is holy if Montsma and Walker could make a decent fist of the roles we know they are capable of, that could be a game changer for us in a league where we probably have a middle budget at best.

Depending on outgoings we may only be two or three away from establishing those that are knocking on the manager's door if they're not starting. Throw in decent youngsters like Duffy, Moylan and Draper to also get decent game time and there is a case for stating we are looking like a good mix of depth, experience and promise.

My only concern is if Montsma and/or Walker don't come through, that for me still leaves a couple of difficult to fill spots i.e. a mobile ball playing CH and genuine finisher. The other must have we currently don't have signed up is somebody who can consistently play the creative attacking midfielder role.

Basically it feels like we just need to nail down a little bit more x factor quality to lift a very effective, competent and well drilled squad of players to the next level.

So at the moment of the players who’s contract expired none are 100% confirmed to be staying, unless I’ve forgotten someone (including Monty in this )

I would say currently about 13 that are likely to be in/around the match day squad regularly, plus Pardington, with possibly Montsma/Makama to add to that.

Still looks like a very solid spine even after the departure of Sorensen, with the flanks being the areas where we are pretty bare especially the right hand side.

Solid spine, if Jackson can manage enough games, but likely to miss a fair few. So quite a lot hinging on Montsma being good to go. Otherwise a bit light at the back, and now also at wing back too.

Would love to see Bishop stay.
Not over fused aboutj

Would like to see Bishop given a contract & Cann too.
Be interesting to see if Jovon stays or goes on loan as he changed dramatically under Skubala!
Personally interested to see if Zane can make an impression this season as he's a very good talent, although it's a massive step up from 18s to League 1. Can see a Premier League/ Championship right winger being brought in on loan.
Very excited for the start of thw season!!!

With the addition of ‘attacking’ midfielder Bayliss (3 goals last season ) & McGrandles (normally a 2 goal man) I would say we’re down on goal scoring midfielders assuming Bish & Mandriou are both on there way.

So we have lost

Mandriou with 8 goals 5 assists
Teddy with 4 goals 4 assists
Taylor with 10 goals 3 assists
Sorensen 6 goals 8 assists

That is going to take some replacing, so as things stand we are certainly needing more quality incomings to get to where we finished last season. Plenty of work still to do.

I realise this may not be popular or constructive - but I’d have preferred we kept Bishop than Bayliss. My understanding of Bayliss’s game is he’s more in Mandriou’s mold than Bishop’s and we’ll completely miss that ability to drive us forward in the centre and win us fouls/get their team booked that Bishop’s driving runs give us. He’s also got that incisive passing in the final third.

I’m very comfortable saying there’s a championship quality player in Ted that I wish we could have got out on the pitch more often.

If it’s a financial thing - fair enough - but on football, we’ll really miss Ted.
