Squad: January 2025

Certainly in the summer. There's three guaranteed to be released I'd suggest (2 being currently on loan and one permanently crocked) with questions over others whose deals expire then both from a do we want them (Duffy) or do they want to 'explore other opportunities' (the defence and House)
… not to mention Ethan Erhahon and Sean Roughan, especially if we don’t get promoted (unlikely). They’ll be assessing their careers (with their agents)

I know it is only early March but with not a lot of news this week I thought it would be interesting to look at current squad and perhaps look at what may happen in summer. When fingers crossed we will still be a league one club.
No doubt our recruitment team are working hard already to stay ahead of things and looking at targets to bring in next season.
I would argue the whole strategy is practically based , not totally perhaps, on selling Erhahon and how much we can get for him. This will ultimately affect the transfer budget I assume.
I have tried to look at things without any sentimentality and I am sure there may be players we will look to offload but possibly can't shift if there are no takers and they are still under contract. Also dependent on if we can get replacements in who are any better. Ultimately the transfer budget will dictate what will happen.

Goalkeepers
We have 3 keepers under contract till at least 2026.
I would argue that perhaps we have made an error here and should be looking at a possible loan of a keeper from the premiership. If so does that mean we send two out on loan or even sell one? But are they sellable assets at moment, personally don't think so.

Central Defence
Hamer the only one I would say will definitely be here next season.
O'connor I think we can agree will be leaving for nothing.
Roughan again I think will definitely leave but that will generate some funds.
But will also cause us an headache as we have not found a decent left sided defender to play wing back but will now need probably need two left sided players to cover left central and wing back.
Jackson rumours that he will be leaving. Been a great servant but has been rather inconsistent this season and again will leave for nothing.
Montsma not sure he has ever got back to were he was before his injuries definitely lost pace. I personally would let him go but not sure how is contract is set up. Again don't think he would generate a fee and with his injury record would there be any takers?
Bradshaw I think a definite leaver. Can't see us getting a fee for him but possibly a negligible one.
Kamson - Kamara still only young so big decision about offering new contract. But even than won't effect first team yet I don't think.
A lot of the above will depend on if we can get players in. We obvious cant leave ourselves without a defence.

Wing backs
Darikwa and Ring going nowhere.
Benn will be leaving I think.
But an area we are desperately short of players.

Midfield
Bayliss, Jefferies, Moylan and McKiernan definite stayers I think.
Erhahon definitely going .
Smith we have been led to believe will also be going.
Unless Clucas is offered a coaching role I can't see us keeping him.
Gallagher is an interesting one. Believe he is currently injured and seems to have been at the club forever. Do we offer him a new contract? Will be a big decision to make on that one.
Mcgrandles I am not a fan to be honest. To me he is a grafter but not much else. Do we keep him or offload? Could we get a small fee for him? If we could I would let him go.
Hamilton hasnt looked anything like he did at times last season. Doesn't look like a league one player this season. Again I personally would let him go and hopefully get a small fee for him.

Forwards
Hackett I would class him as a forward player even though he has mostly played out of position.. I have a feeling he is not too happy being used like he is so might be one player trying to get a move.
Makama, Collins and Street will be going nowhere.
Walker definitely leaving I think. A very expensive gamble that didn't pay off.
Draper although he has signed a new contract I just have a feeling that Walsall may come back in for him and he may leave.
House another very interesting one. Two years ago a very saleable asset. Value must have gone down. Do we offer new contract, will he want to stay?

Obviously some of the players may have options on their contracts to extend that we are not aware of. Some players we want to keep may not want to stay or we might get offers we can't turn down for some of the players. And obviously we can't get rid of anybody without adequate replacements. I am sure I will have missed somebody out somewhere. These are just my opinions feel free to shoot me down in flames!
The biggest factor in all this is of course BUDGET.

Difficult to argue with any of that. The spanner in the works could be a change of head coach / coaching team, although noises coming out of the club during the last couple of weeks suggest the directors are happy with our performances and league position compared with the 17th-placed budget.

Massive rebuild this summer. Not sure if that's a good thing tbh.
Especially if we're talking defence. All key and experienced players potentially leaving at the same time. Plus obviously our best midfielder as well.
Big challenge and very tricky window. Don't get this right and we're in trouble...

I would love to see someone else to deal with that task. Someone like Ryan Lowe who would be my favourite candidate.

More than likely we will stick with our cheap option though and we will... keep pushing to find that intensity... 🙄

I also agree apart from one thing: Ring is NOT a wing-back!

Seems like a perfect time to consider a change to a back 4 with the expected defensive outgoings. That does create the aforementioned additional pressure to bring in two left sided defenders but at least that would be offset to some degree by having Hackett and Ring that could finally be utilised properly - two new attacking players effectively. If we stick with 5 at the back I would make the argument for even more players being required as Hackett and Ring may as well not be at the club and should be moved on, not least to be fair to them and their careers!

Aside from new signings naturally, the 4 or 5 at the back issue will be the most interesting aspect for second guessing over the Summer imo.

Was last summer too, think we brought in double figures and nearly all permanent?

Thanks for that, Scot.

Makes me wonder if we can afford another huge turnover this coming summer, despite the number of players out of contract.

We definitely can't afford replacing the players out of contract AND changing the head coach again.

Lets hope we have a really good run-in and it helps persuade some of our out of contract players to re-sign, and the talk about replacing Skubala subsides.

If it doesn't and we lose Paudie, Sean and Jackson, and the board decide we also need coaching changes, it will have to be a big summer rebuild with all the uncertainty that always brings.
