Squad Age

So far looking at a more experienced squad, those who have moved on against those who have been bought in.

Still expecting 5 in if DC wants his 22 man squad, now we have the experience will we look for more youthful exuberance?

I can see us bringing in some young loanees which will bring the average age down. If Shaw signs, he is 23 I believe. But it's true that the squad looks a very much more seasoned than the slightly green set of players we started last year with.
I imagine Scotimp will do some analysis before the season starts but it feels we have a lot of promotions and captains within the squad, which is reassuring.

I'm with Gijsbert on this, a few young Academy players from Championship (and maybe above? we can dream) getting an airing and some experience seems likely.

Vickers - 22 Smith - 24
Eardley - 29 Waterfall - 27 Wilson - 29 Toffolo - 22 Habergham - 26
O'Connor - 30 Pett - 26 Chapman - 17 Bostwick - 30 Frecklington - 32 Anderson - 21
Akinde - 29 Rhead - 34 Green - 31 Andrade - 24

Average Age - 26.65

Yes there's experience but there's also youngsters and players at their prime.

I'd expect if a back up RB is signed they'll be a younger player. 2 CB's likely 1 more experienced and 1 younger to learn off Wilson. Winger signings tend to be younger (Anderson and Ginnelly) although Stewart and Arnold weren't spring chickens. A younger CM wouldn't go amiss considering expected 1st choice 3 are all above 30. ST expected to be Shaw who's 23.

Only players I've seen us linked with around here is Shaw, Cargill, Rowe and Whitfield. All of these are under 26 so would reduce the average age.

So basically not an old squad at 26 but would expect it to become younger with new signings. Would expect the ex PE teachers are more comfortable working with younger players than older.

If we play it smart we will concentrate on permanent signings up to aug 9th. Then use August 9th - August 31st for signing loans and free agents.
Which gives us the option to add to the squad after they have played a couple of games

Hopefully what Danny meant when he said he wanted a squad of 22. 22 by August 9th and then 2-3 loanees in by 31st August. Would like to see a squad of 24-25.

Interesting to note that Mansfield (Bishop) and County (Vaughan) have also signed older heads in CM and along with Luton last season (McCormack) and Wycombe (who's name escapes me), they also had seasoned CM's in there.

But then CM is hugely influential, often overlooked by football fans IMO, area of the team.

I hope you are right, he talks about 22 but even that must be the bare minimum and would leave us with the smallest squad in the league again. such a risk [to injury] for a team where the manager is quoted as saying promotion is the aim.
We can sign 8 loanees in total. Last season we did 4 in August and 4 in jan. can’t see any reason why we wouldn’t sign 4 again this August.

22 would leave us with 5 more signings overall. But he's also said he wants 2 in each position. GK's sorted, 5.5 DF's ( 1/2 Bozzy), 4 MF's (Chapman 1/2 & 1/2 Bozzy), 5 FW's (Anderson & Andrade inc because I think we're going 4-3-3).

So RB, CB, CB/CM, CM, 2WG's depending upon how Shaw plays and if Green is willing to play out wide. If we play 4-4-2 3WG's depending upon Andrade but where does that leave Shaw? And how much football is Chapman ready for? At 17 is he ready to compete with our other CM's for a whole season? What about O'Connor's and Freck's fitness? Are they ready for a whole season?

I reckon we'll end up with slightly more or light at the back or midfield

Left out Walton as I saw someone thought he'd left for Matlock and he's taking his time over the contract so uncertain he'll stick around. If he does then I'd expect him to be loaned out with recall option anyway.
