Spurs Women - the Mushroom period between season 7 and 8

Two things; TQ and sld.

My internet dropped out five days ago. The result was that I was provided with a new modem today and everything is working again.

The second thing is that I’m off to the Kimberley tomorrow for a few days, a sudden and unexpected opportunity.

I guess our two squads should be just about sorted by the time I get back.

I wish they would rate all these signings that the other clubs in the WSL are signing ... it would help knowing how strong or not they r becoming. Obv we know about the big names but the others ??? ... unless u play EA Soccer Manager and play the women's league well, u dont get a clue

I just look at the team and think they cant pay too much and base it on that .. ie Brum Charlton etc ... but the likes of the Toons Pool Villa are signing more, then arrivals at Brighton and LCL keep happening etc - just makes me wonder

Spurs' record in the WSL era against Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United is woeful (two wins, four draws and 45 defeats)... in 7 seasons so will season 8 be the breakthru or will we fall short again


I dont agree that Naz could be breakthru player though - she has been poor every season but this season she will be found out by Martin for sure ... her days are numbered
 
Strange decision for a player in her twilight zone - TO take time out to spend with yr family for whatever period.
She may not get a chance of another contract as her days draw down

Yep totally agree esp with Brighton being at their place and not BR ... tech we should do well against all others if the team can keep free of injuries and red cards.

Will Ho rotate more, given more games in League Cup this year? Last year he more or less played his strongest side, including games against WSL2 opposition in Birmingham and Bristol.

For me, from my days as a Football Manager and Coach (amateur I might add) .. my moto was always play your strongest team no matter what and why I am a little coy on signing development players and trying to fit them in.

This level is so way out of my ball park as they say but the morale is the same .. can he afford to lose games just to fit players in and see if they can cope at whatever level. No game is easy and if u want success you cannot afford to throw away cup games neither. They are your quickest chance of success every season.

We have no U21 side anymore in WSL2 to test players and give them regular match time and experience each and every week .. yet we sign Wijk and Nilden as we did with Vinberg and Grant to do same... ie become development players.
But how do we develop them unless we loan them out?

Grant leaves after 2.5 seasons as she never got the time to impress by 2 managers. As for Vinberg she has been given more time as Martin kept her as he knows her unlike Charli but to me she has not impressed in the basics of the role she is being trained to play for us .. wing attack.

Yes she has speed and some ball control but yet again another mediocre player with no end product. It is just not there and I dont see her turning that corner like I dont with Naz who has had 8 seasons to get to the next level and has never done so and why i wanted her moved on 2 seasons ago. Why we wont is a reason I just dont get at all.

I can then say the same for Gatwick and Dennis as development players from the academy ... they have the attitude and spirit yet are poles apart as far as types of players and skill level but r they ready ??? - Im not sure if they can ever be also used neither UNLESS Martin wants to dilute the team with rotational subbing and that cost us so many points last season by throwing games from winning positions.

That could be his downfall in games where we need points to get us into the top 3/4 .. or dare I say it .. we let others pass us by because we want to be fair to all. We either want to WIN all games or throw games to develop players hoping they become better players and save investing in better players in the next window or 2. I just dont get it. Neither is wrong but at the cost of what?

For me the top 4 build a strong winning 1st 11 and have a bench full of game changers and that has to be the blueprint if u want to WIN. BUT u cant keep everyone happy can you as only 5 get the chance of rotational mins. If u want mid table or best of the rest then you can afford to dilute the team and just bag whatever points you can win by playing such players because they are in the squad of 25. A catch 22 no matter what.

Lets face it .. only about 18 players will get regular game time and only some of them will be given rotational mini minutes. The rest will only get gym work and grass training and minimal if not zero play time and will be seat cleaners.

At the moment it seems we are building a strong 11 team (bar RWA and DM) but with rotational backup of equal quality ... that means 18 good solid players covering all positions.

Yet we do have however the following on the bench ...
Gatwick Dennis Naz Oroz Ahtinen Wijk M.Nilden but none are game real changers because they do not get the chance minutes anymore to prove themselves .. then comes the next level picks namely Vinberg Spence Summanen and they when picked often blow hot and cold.

Martin has to decide and it may cost him his target of top 4 or to beat last season's total. He will either better his first season or not and he has to live with that as we all know a Football Coach life expectancy is short but I do think now the Man U position is gone that Spurs know he is commited and will support him.

As for future income to boost investment .. that can take another decade or more yet as I still dont think there is enough fans to go around in our part of London unless more switch from the men's support to help support the women as well. Even I cant get to all their games as we live too far away but I would if we were closer. If they can start to win at the Lane then maybe they could be switched there to play all their games and more peeps might come to the bigger stadium on a regular basis BUT you cannot change the atmosphere that a 1/10th (if that) attendance brings with 3 sides not being populated but then it's the same at Brisbane Road.

Onwards and upwards but this season we are fielding by far the best team we have ever built for the women's campaign. Not all £500k - £1.5Mill players I might add but they are none the less an exciting bunch and it will be great to see how far we can go. I fear however that not having RWA and DM covered with top players may well hold us back .. only time will tell.

The trouble is we have got much better on paper with new signings etc but the other teams have also and we will not know until Jan as to how we have faired until half the season has passed.

As per the travel list u r so right Xander but will they all get game time is my question? as per my answer above.

Yes this is a training camp, so Gym work and grass training in blue sky warm conditions will be the main task at hand

As for the 2 games maybe it will be like the men's team where we see 4 different teams in 4 different halves and what will Martin actually get from that?

The reason I mention rotation is that we play at Brighton in Cup on Weds 30th September and then play at home to London City at 12:00 on Sunday 4th October.
Now, assuming we get off to a decent start in the league, I wouldn’t want to risk our top players in a cup game where Brighton probably will have rotated.

Totally get it but guess if we r not careful Brighton could be the one that takes the league if we play a weakened side and we get beaten ... that is why i still want 2 top players to be signed (RWA and DM) so we do not have to play dilutedly skilled players again as subs. LCL will be our joint WSL nemisis club alongside the manure spreaders and we cant afford to drop points against neither - not any more.
Maybe the cup run will be taken more seriously !!!! who knows eh?

We also cant afford 2 more young academy players to be integrated into the squad and be given play time - we already have too many players under development wanting game time.
