Spurs Women - the Mushroom period between season 7 and 8

sldspurs

Vital Football Hero
This thread will try cover the period from Season 7 end (last Sat) to the start of Season 8

Why mushroom? - becos it is common that THFC do not keep fans abreast with what is going on until a shirt appears so we have to come out from the understair cupboard and do it ourselves.

1 ... comings and goings
2 ... WSL transfer rumours
3 ... Info on players signed
4 ... any staff updates
5 ... the window period once know
6 ... any recommended sites that I find

enjoy

As I said on the other thread, it sounds like we have agreements in place ready for the window officially opening, maybe a few quality players whose contracts at their current clubs are ending?

I guess things will be kept under wraps until July 1st which I assume is when the window opens?

Yep as u said TQ - Ho's last post match interview says it all without giving much away.

My only concern is what goes on behind the scenes in the women's game.

Is it just personal knowledge, or group knowledge from within the camp
It is just statistical controlled now like in the Moneyball movie
Do they even talk to the players about their own known contacts and who they have played with & who inspires them esp at Intl camps etc (eg Who would make the team better and fit in!)
Do they actual do research like we fans have to do and trust the media sources
Do they wait for agents to contact them
Is there some document that is sent around from the WSL/EU leagues that list potential players whose contracts are up and a dossier of their calibre and stats
Do players themselves actually apply to join direct

It would be good to know what really goes on behind the scenes.

I would think that quite a few of those scenarios exist, I would imagine most if not all peddled by players agents.

Question sld.......would you take Beth Mead?

So for the newbies coming to this new thread - the first rumour is Kirsty Hanson - Striker from Aston Villa .. even their own fans think she is wasted at theirs (ripe for picking)

Then we have Eliz Terland (Norwegian) from Man U being allowed to leave at the right price

Also Selina Cerci is available from Hoffenheim who scores for fun and who those down the road want so why not us eh?

So many cast off's from the big teams being already announced but the better ones are in their prime and we want to drive the average age down not up.

So where are we light? esp with Maike Hamano going back to Chelsea and 6 players already announced as leaving at the end of June, namely Graham Rybrink Buhler Grant AJT (James-Taylor) and our Captain Beth England.

For me it is the following ...

We def need a good CB cover to pair up with Bartrip esp with AJT & Buhler both leaving
We def need both wing attacks upgraded to "elite" status .. not development status. Vinberg Gatwick Naz Dennis are simply not good enough imho to get us to top 3/4 yet 3 of these were recently extnd by the club which says a lot namely (Gatwick Dennis Vinberg) - Naz's contract is up next year so she could be moved on for some money in Jan (or even this Summer)
We def need 2 new creative midfielders
Spence Summanen blow hot and cold too much, Ahtinen is average at best and Oroz - well I just do not see where she fits in anymore and that leaves Csiki who shouldnt have been ever signed in the first place... both Vilaham signings.
So we need 2 new elite status creative midfielders to allow Gaupset to be released alongside Holdt to strut their stuff & to supply the Striker/s
Then at the sharp end we def need 1 or 2 prolific WSL strikers to replace Tandberg/Thomas as 1st choice.
To get top 3/4 one needs to be well into +GD and we have never finished a season in + ... always -GD and that seriously needs to change.
I also personally feel we need a better GK than Kop - for me she doesnt breed confidence that she can or will stop goal attacks. Her positioning, decision making and distribution is also very worrying. There have been so many good GK's available over the last 4 windows yet we sign Kop as the 3rd status keeper from Leicester - enough said.
This will cover all areas and allow us to field a 1st team of 11 elite players and not just 5 as we have at the moment esp with our 6th Hamano leaving and going back to Chelsea.

Will it happen remains to be seen when player announcements get made in July.

Then the bench skill level can then be looked at over the next 2-4 windows after the summer.

As for the club set up ... we really need a women's U21 side created and put into the WSL2 league for bench players to get some playing time rather than just gym and development training.

If we can keep a squad injury free that would help so lets see what transpires over the coming months

Last but not least is Club set-up .. we still need a new Dir of the Women's game and an experienced player researcher.

Wow, that’s a lot to think about, sld. I have to say that I avoid all the speculation during the PL Window …. I just wait until it’s all over and we know what we’ve got. But this WSL Window is really interesting. There are quite a few high profile players being talked about.

Does anyone think Shaw will leave City? I don’t. In hindsight that would be as silly as selling Kane to Bayern, given what he is doing there and our lack of goals.

It does appear that Martin has identified players he needs and he does seem to know what he’s doing so …. fingers crossed.

Mead? I’d take her, TQ. I think she still has a good year or two if she stays fit and would be a useful squad player in any case.

And I’d love to get Hanson in.

Yeah, I like Hanson, she is a big improvement on Naz.

Yes - way better than Naz (and the others) and esp if Hamano deal cannot be made - in fact I would take both so they can back each other up to save injuries as both are game changers for me from the bench

It is also about sharing what is out there and who we missed out on ... that also shows our real ambition.

The last 6 to 8 windows has proven that to me ... there has been many "MANY" top players incl better GK's on free's leaving big clubs all over Europe and we didnt bring any in. Not one since Beth came... bar this January

Olivia came out of the blue if being honest but what a player she has turned out to be and loves being part of our team development as also mentioned by Julie recently - really good to see. I think Toko feels the same as will Signe in her own way. These are the core players along with Amanda (who we def need to tie down to a longer deal along with Clare.

As for Shaw she clearly has not been offered enough from a Club owned by Arabs and that speaks volumes .. she is holding them to ransom like Russo did with Man U and it back fired big time. She will be offered what she wants from Chelski as they have MILLIONS in the bank from a recent sale back to the US - unlike us. I see her going now ibh.

Your point about Martin identifying early ... was that based on past experience arather than from Women's soccer wider picture where better players are available and he has never seen them play.

If it's just what he has seen at Man U and in Skan then that is a short view. Only he knows what money has been tabled to spend and that could be what holds us back

Man U Man C Chelski and the Red mob down the road wont hold back on who they sign this window nor will the likes of LCL and Brighton. The rest I think cannot spend that much .. so it's yet again what can we do to keep 5th all over again.

Breaking 36 points and getting into a healthy +GD has to be our first target which means to me a better strike force and a better GK.

Yeah, I like Hanson, she is a big improvement on Naz.
Anyone is better than Naz ... she has not improved since 3 seasons and no matter how much gym or training it will not make her any better than she is.

her becoming a Lioness was a tick box exercise and nothing more

Sorry to say but thats the same with Vinberg, Dennis and Gatwick. They are already at their peak and will be bench warmers until their contracts expire. The latter 2 need loaning out to a Champ team to get games to see if they can break into another level... but with Vinberg based on the last 2/3 games ... she just cannot do anything with the ball once she breaks through and Olivia and Signe must now be thinking why bother passing to her?

All are championship level if that for me.... but Naz we could get some decent money for if we move her on as soon as she recovers from her ACL.

Absolutely, with Beth going we have to do everything we can to find a prolific goalscorer, I can't see Tandberg cutting it, maybe not even as a backup.

Tandberg is no better than a hold up player like Solanke is for the men - neither will score many goals that is plain to see but she is worth keeping as she is a good friend of Signe but maybe not as a No1 "9" (bench warmer)

This is very interesting and how you have time sld to research and write all this is unbelievable. You really do have my admiration and thanks.

The detail is rather too much to take in but I have gleaned who ideally should go and the better quality players that would improve us.

As we I think are steadily improving and finished the season quite well with Martin Ho really developing an enthusiastic and united squad. I get improvements are needed just as with the men. I also think MH has a clear vision of where he is going, how to get there and who he can get (has agreements with already) that will improve the team in line with his vision.

In my early stages of getting to know the team I will just have to accept the results of his and his operational team’s work and trust them. I can then judge with my own eyes. Other players I can see and form an opinion of when we play them. Time won’t allow anything further. However your suggestions could give us all a short cut from watching other team’s matches and that will be welcome.

So thank you sld and if course TQ and Geof. Glad you are getting more views! Deserved!

cheers 54 ... it will get under your skin and in your blood b4 too long ... they deserve the following if only as a distraction now and again from the Men
