Spurs v Watford Carabao Cup

Does Poch care ? My only interest is seeing youngsters perform if I'm honest.

So what kind of side should he put out ? If winning is paramount we will need a few big guns in there, if it's used purely for game time then it's going to be close.

Gazza is pretty nailed on as Poch has already mentioned him. I think Sissoko needs a run if fit, Winks needs to sharpen up and Amos needs to play. KWP and Foyth too if fit. Llorente I guess will play and Alli needs a game. Sanchez maybe , Davies perhaps.

I want to the thing so I hope it's fairly strong, something like this:

Gazza, Aurier, Toby, Sanchez, Davies, Wanyama, Winks, Dele, Moura, Son, Llorente

Said this last year, but making 10 changes never helps anyone. Should be max 5 or 6 changes so we don’t just look completely off colour.

I would maintain Gazza, one of Toby or Jan plus Rose in the back line. That means one of Sanchez or Foyth comes in plus either Aurier or KWP.

Probably makes sense to change the midfield though. Wanyama / Amos and Winks would be my choice. Ahead of that I’d love to see Lamela, Moura and Dele with Son in Kane’s place. Leave Eriksen and Kane on the bench.

The alternative is play Foyth, Sanchez and one of Toby and Jan in a back 3 and attack Watford wide with the wing-backs. That would mean one of Moura or Dele reverts to the bench.

As for Llorente and Sissoko, not for me. If fit, I may put Sissoko on the bench but I have no qualms in just forgetting about Llorente until there is either an injury crisis or he leaves the club. That’s unless someone wants to kidnap his wife and kids to ensure he puts in a shift for the club. Haven’t seen it yet in any appearance he’s made for THFC.

Can't see any coverage of this game anywhere as yet. My usual feeds are very reliable but don't show many League Cup games.
Any sources?

The sooner we tank this the better. We can't compete on 4 fronts and should not even attempt it.

We have a knackered squad, anyone who thinks we should go all out and risk our players is mad.

We have players in a 'knackered squad' who rarely get a look in I think they would see it differently.

Poch has got his excuses in early when he said we're not a contender in any facet in any competition.

I hope he gives the right players the chance to push their credentials.

I agree, but I also agree with Mutley, rotate and give players a chance but not too many changes! Say 5/6 first teasers with a mix of youth and bench players.

The big prize again for us this season, has to be Top 4 - and honestly unless we bought two amazing midfielders and a top quality additional striker in January - which is unlikely, I think it will prove beyond us, but if we prioritize the PL above all else, we might at least make a decent fist of it.

So to that extent, I think the cups should and can only be a chance for kids to shine.

Mauricio Pochettino cannot understand obsession over team selection

Mauricio Pochettino cannot understand why people get so obsessed with team selection in this country.
The Tottenham boss clashed with journalists last week after he was questioned about his decision to leave Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld at home for their Champions League game at Inter Milan.
He is planning on making more changes for Wednesday's Carabao Cup clash with Watford in Milton Keynes and does not think he should come under scrutiny.
"Of course we want to win but if you say the same question to the manager of Watford, why he picked 11 different players against Reading (in the last round), with the risk to lose, when they didn't play European competition, and we are involved in the Champions League," he said.

"We have a lot of games ahead. I think we rotate, trying to find the best solution to try to win games.
"But the obsession here in England is to try to disrespect the players who play in one or another competition, and for me it's so difficult to understand.
"It's like we disrespect the competition or we don't take it seriously. I think when Tottenham are going to play tomorrow, we are going trying to win.
"When you sign players and you have 24 players in your squad, you need to respect all the players. If not, if they're going to have the possibility to play and show their quality, why do you pay their salary, why do you provide the food every day at the training ground?

"Sorry, but for me it's so difficult to understand, that obsession about why one or another plays. It's like all the managers want to lose. No one wants to win."
Pochettino believes former players in a pundit role are some of the worst offenders for discussing the topic.
"I think it's crazy and the problems sometimes is not from the media. But sometimes some people who play football and were professionals.
"Their opinion is similar and it's difficult to understand, because I was a professional player and now a manager, and you need to understand that to deal with 24 or 25 players is not easy.

"To give the possibility to play to all the players always is so important because they need to feel the confidence and trust. They need to challenge the players they believe are ahead of them.
"In the end for me it's about the squad. It's about being a team. If you want to win some competitions you can win or lose with one or with another.
"I repeat again, I don't understand the obsession with asking about the players that are going to play in one or another competition because when we are going to play tomorrow, or Saturday, or Wednesday, or I don't know, always it's Tottenham that's going to play, and your honour.
"But of course I understand you and everyone needs to find always some reason to talk."

I think the most depressing aspect of his comment is that I can find no fault with it.

So why do us on this forum talk about who is going to be picked for each game ? What is our obsession ? Poch wants to know. I get why we have 25 players and that they all need to play. Why doesn't he get that we are interested ? And that the press are there to inform us.

Is it me NRD or am I right in thinking they don't challenge other clubs as much when they rest players?

Other clubs have made signings with managers not saying they didn't need signings. Poch has set himself up to be challenged. He is showing a tetchy side recently which is out of character for him. Does he think that by questioning the press as to their motives for challenging him they will not ask ? They will probably do it even more.

It is a worry to see him react and behave in a slightly Mourinho-esque way but if he selects the best personnel to suit each occasion, the performances should do the talking!
