The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is to host the NFL International Combine next month as one of the league’s most important events in the search for global talent comes to the UK for the first time.
Twelve British players are among fifty athletes invited to impress ‘NFL evaluators’ in the hope of earning a place on the league’s International Player Pathway, the programme which has helped a number of overseas players, including Britain’s Efe Obada, forge successful careers in the NFL.
The NFL Combine is an annual event in the US where top college prospects come together to perform in physical and mental workouts in front of coaches and scouts in the run up to the NFL Draft.
Since 2018, the league has also been operating an international version of the scouting showcase for athletes from outside the US, with the first edition held in Australia and the 2019 event hosted by Germany.
No International Combine took place last year amidst the coronavirus pandemic but it is back on the agenda this season and scheduled for October 12, sandwiched between the two London Series games being played at Spurs - Atlanta Falcons vs New York Jets on October 10 and Jacksonville Jaguars vs Miami Dolphins on October 17.
While the majority of the players invited are from Europe, athletes from Japan, New Zealand and Nigeria have also been offered the chance to take part. The league has said it will host a second International Combine in Mexico later in October for any athletes unable to travel to the UK because of Covid restrictions.
A number of athletes will be selected from the combine to join a three-month training programme in the US as part of the IPP, before the best candidates are allocated to NFL teams ahead of the 2022 season, where they will fight for a place on the roster.
