Southampton v Aston Villa Match Thread - Sat 30 Jan - 8pm - Sky Sports

The way he left Romelu for dead last night was ridiculous. Can't think of too many players in the PL who can do that. Not a one off either , Super Jack does it time after time.

Irreplaceable to us
Hilarious how studio pundits were all refering to him as "Jack"
Its like he has suddenly become everyones best friend.
Only other player I can think of referred to by his first name is Pele.
Thatll do.

I thought that but then Keane would have coached him during his time at Villa I suppose.

Phew!!!! Couldn't watch last night but managed to avoid score to watch the Sky rerun this morning. My God that was a hard earned 3 points. Cracking goal to win it.

Thankfully the defence was back to the normal standard for this season. It needed to be, it was a good Southampton side we were up against. Did get some pretty big breaks from VAR. I'd resigned myself to the penalty, was quite shocked when it wasn’t given. The offside was very similar to the two that Ollie Watkins was denied earlier this season, complete bullshit if I'm being honest.

Wow, you must be a masochist for being able to watch that without checking the final score. It was stressful viewing to say the least!

Barkely is a bit of an enigma, it wasn’t his greatest game as he seems to struggle in faster games. But he scored the winner, and there was one particular time he was forced into the corner surrounded by three players but managed to play the ball to Cash. A very small thing, but he does have great skill in that position we’ve not had for a long time.

As with other comments and I think it’s pretty unanimous, I’d love him to sign but at the right price. I don’t know what the right price is these days, but I hope it’s closer to £20m than £40m.

What I can't quite figure out with Barkley is whether he just isn't sharp enough or a facet of his game is overplaying the ball. The moment you're talking about he had 2 or 3 opportunities to release the ball instead of walking it into the corner. Anything under 25MM and I think we've got a good deal. I originally felt anything over 20MM reduced value for money but I think 25MM is probably good value in this market.

I don't recall anyone questioning his workrate and fitness before he got injured and then came back to play three games in a week.

He's a proper physical athlete and he really brings that to the middle of the pitch when he plays.

I think the Leeds game was a wake-up call to the things Barkley didn't do well and to be fair nobody played well in that game. I just think we started to analyze his game a little more after that and in his absence, we looked more solid and balanced.

He is a strong physical athlete yes but his workrate and teamwork defensively is hit and miss. He goes through spells of closing down. He and Traore can be really lazy getting back and closing down. I think Barkley gets away with it more than Traore because Watkins can do the running of two players.

Southampton are now saying they don't want that ref to ref them again. Thought he did a good job. See it at the right angle and the ball came off Targett's leg before hitting his hand. Ings was definitely offside for his disallowed goal.

I posted it wasnt a penalty, but as you say seen from the right angle it did come up of his thigh, and if we are enforcing stupid margins on off side then off side it was.
