Southampton v Aston Villa Match Thread - Sat 30 Jan - 8pm - Sky Sports

Same team for me including Bert who looks dynamic at the moment, look at the second goal against Newcastle. Appreciate he doesn’t cover well but we played some of our best football for a long time in the first half when we were pretty cautious first 15 minutes then went for the throat. Same with Barkley, give him the first half and look to change both with 30 minutes remaining if necessary.
I believe Sanson can make an impact straight away but his time will come sooner rather than later.
Central defence is our weakness and despite Mings improvement in attacking his headers neither he nor Konza are the types of central defender that instill me with me confidence aerially. Hause did but he’s injured and not so mobile I suppose. Watch out for Ings and Bednarek. Then who can forget those free kicks against us? Perhaps Ward-Prowse won’t be able to repeat those though.
If we take Sir Dennis’s view that we’re a mid table side, which it’s hard to argue against as that’s where we are, we may be able to manage our expectations more.
Villa to win 1 - 3 😂

Thing is if you have to rely on "wingers" to cover fullbacks you have to question how good the fullbacks are. Targett is now holding his own one on one, Cash is not that far off either. I get it against City or other top clubs but we should be able to contain most clubs without 9 men in defence

Totally agree.

I know it's a well-worn cliche but he needs time to settle, get used to the English game. I think he looks great in the YouTube clips, but let's not forget that a YouTube video is always the very best of what they can do. Get him some minutes here and there for a game or two, then if he's as good as we think he is he'll be in the team soon enough....

Fuck that. Can't we just throw him in and then lambast him from the get go and give the recruitment team the finger for their incompetence. Again! :fish:

Couldn't agree more.

Only have to think of last years shambles there to realise how far we have come.

On top of that I had to stand next to @Melon Donkey as well.

That was my final away trip last year and even my glass was half empty as we trudged back to the car...nothing this season has been close to resembling some of those horrendous non displays last year. And you watched it....and had to cope with Melon Donkey as well....probably good to have had a year to get over it! :grinning:

Need longer than that. You have never met Melon Donkey.

I hate zonal marking. It makes no sense to me at all
Apparently, stats prove it's the best method of defending a corner, the way around it is to take a short corner and then they don't know what they should be doing in theory
It can be an effective way of defending, but the way we are doing it currently is as a "partial" zone with "blockers" to disturb the runs from the threats. I used a zone (albeit at the college level) with a 2-4-2, essentially a man on each post, then a line of four about 4-5 yards from goal, spread from just in front of the near post, to just beyond the far post, then two more about two yards outside the six-yard-box. The remaining two players were then responsible for the top of the box and/or to get out and defend the short corner. When we scouted our opposition, we assessed their delivery and threats and adjusted the position of players within the zone. For example, if a team consistently delivered to the back post, then our best headers would be in that part of the zone. If they were hitting outswingers then a tall player in the two etc etc.
The key with zonal is that you attack the ball in the space around you. With the way Villa are doing it, our biggest players are completely static unless it drops on their head, we have nobody on the posts and the blockers aren't doing their jobs (we have seen McGinn, Luiz and now Barkley all fail to stay goal-side as blockers). It's why I never deployed blockers - too much potential for them being over-powered or losing sight of their man as the ball is delivered....

After the amount of goals we've conceded through errors with this set up, you would think they'd change something though. Mings and Konsa are clearly being told not to attack the incoming ball. Defending set pieces is probably our biggest weakness for me at the moment.

Please don't encourage him Langoe.

The day I thought SJ would leave. Walked off the pitch straight away. No clapping the fans, no speaking to team mates just thoroughly pissed off .

yep was an angry away end, remember Hourihane was the only one who came over and stood talking to fans for a while trying to calm a few heads down

It’s a game to see where we really are. After allowing Burnley to score 25% of their season’s goals in about 20 minutes against us it’s either going to wake us up to the basics again or prove that we have a significant defensive frailty. Ings and co will be thinking they can pull us apart again despite their own poor run. I’ve predicted 3-1 to Villa on Erod but with no real confidence.

Walcott always seems to get one against us or am I imagining it.

If we play like we did first half against Burnley we'll be ok
