Southampton v Aston Villa Match Thread - Sat 30 Jan - 8pm - Sky Sports

I think it's too soon to be replacing Barkley or Traore with a brand new signing to be honest

Why? The bloke looks mega fit and those two are far from being able to play for 60 mins let alone 90+. Depending of course how he looks in training I'd happily replace one of them.

Yeah agree on SJM, he's got to step it back up.

Baring injuries I'd imagine it will be the same XI that has been playing so well recently, possibly Ghazi in for Traore who was poor yesterday.

Southampton shouldn't hold any fear. We may have won 1 of our last 5 but they've only won 1 of their last 6, scoring 2 goals in the process.

Now I know similar was said of Burnley, but Southampton are a much different proposition. Can't see them grinding out results as well as Burnley do, or fighting back as well. If we can get the early goal I'd back us to go on and win it comfortably.

He predominantly plays in the middle so he's not going to replace Bert (I'm expecting El Ghazi to get a start in this one). Sanson could step in for Barkley but he's likely there to give McGinn and Luiz competition.

Having read a few Southampton fans views, they seem just as unsure about this game as we are. They have a few injury problems and are in the midst of a bit of a bad run themselves.

I know it's a well-worn cliche but he needs time to settle, get used to the English game. I think he looks great in the YouTube clips, but let's not forget that a YouTube video is always the very best of what they can do. Get him some minutes here and there for a game or two, then if he's as good as we think he is he'll be in the team soon enough....

Realistically he's a signing for next season. Like you said, give him minutes here and there for a few games, if he looks good maybe he can get a start if one of the other lads starts to look tired or if Barkley picks up another injury. We've played half a season excellently with this settled team, no need in throwing in a French lad with no PL experience and risking anything yet.

I can. Southampton are better than Burnley

Same team for me including Bert who looks dynamic at the moment, look at the second goal against Newcastle. Appreciate he doesn’t cover well but we played some of our best football for a long time in the first half when we were pretty cautious first 15 minutes then went for the throat. Same with Barkley, give him the first half and look to change both with 30 minutes remaining if necessary.
I believe Sanson can make an impact straight away but his time will come sooner rather than later.
Central defence is our weakness and despite Mings improvement in attacking his headers neither he nor Konza are the types of central defender that instill me with me confidence aerially. Hause did but he’s injured and not so mobile I suppose. Watch out for Ings and Bednarek. Then who can forget those free kicks against us? Perhaps Ward-Prowse won’t be able to repeat those though.
If we take Sir Dennis’s view that we’re a mid table side, which it’s hard to argue against as that’s where we are, we may be able to manage our expectations more.
Villa to win 1 - 3 😂
