KippaxBlue’s verdict:-
Southampton 4-1 FA Cup
City's excellent win at Southampton gets them a FA Cup Semi-final match at Wembley against Liverpool. For the Southampton game City made 4 changes - Steffen in for Ederson, Gundogan for Benardo Silva, Jesus for Mahrez and Sterling for Foden. After the last two games without goals changes were inevitable.
After early pressure City had an escape when Armstrong hit the post on 9 minutes. However 2 minutes later Sterling took advantage of a defensive error to take a pass from Jesus and score giving City the vital lead. A few minutes later Jesus shot over the bar and a little later he was back in our penalty area defending! Grealish was playing more central as a secret centre forward. He did hit the post when it might have been easier to score. On 35 minutes on a City break Rodri had a shot deflected for a corner. Just when we thought we would be ahead at half time disaster struck. Right at the end of the 2 added minutes Laporte deflected a cross into his own goal. So it was one all at the interval.
After several early scrambles De Bruyne shot over the bar and a minute or so later when Grealish lost the ball Steffen had to make a save. Shortly after Jesus made a run into the penalty area and was brought down by Salisu and it was so obvious a foul no VAR was necessary. Kevin De Bruyne took the kick and scored shooting low to the left. 2-1 to City on 62 minutes.
Then Pep made two key changes bringing on Foden for Jesus and Mahrez for Grealish.
On 72 minutes Steffen had to make a good save so it was not game over yet. Then three minutes later Foden scored a brilliant goal. Taking a pass from De Bruyne he cracked the ball with his left foot into the far top corner - a wonderful effort.
Now it was game over and it certainly was a few minutes later when Mahrez finished off a good move involving Cancelo and Gundogan shooting past the keeper to make it 4-1. On came Zinchenko, Fernandinho and Axe for Cancelo, Rodri and Laporte. The excellent second half performance was just too good for the home side so Wembley here we come -yet again
