🚹 Son Heung-Min - Player Thread

Son might have to do national service for South Korea . Two years are required before 28 th birthday. The only exceptions being sportsmen achieving high levels such as semi finals in world cup !!

Was reading an article today about the impact of the World Cup on some of our players (https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/players/tottenham-world-cup-son-military-14769252)

Interesting stuff on Son....

"Son's World Cup performances could impact what comes later in his career. There have been plenty of mixed messages put out about Son and the prospect of him doing military service back in his native South Korea. The player himself is reluctant to ever discuss due to an problems that would cause back home.

There have been various ages given for when the 25-year-old would have to complete that service. South Korean law says it must be done by 28, but delays have reportedly been allowed in the past in certain cases.

South Korean laws indicate that sportsmen who win medals in the Olympic Games or gold medals at the Asian Games will be handed exemptions from military services but they still have to do four weeks of basic training.

However, the South Korean team that reached the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup was given a special pardon from the government from military service for their efforts.

If Son and his team-mates could pull off a similar, albeit unlikely, achievement on foreign soil then that could feasibly happen again. If not then Son's big chance will come at the Asian Games in Indonesia in August where they will need to take home the gold medal."

So turns out the Asian Games football section runs from 15 Aug to 1 Sep. Haven't dug too deeply here but in the Olympics, Son played as one of the allowable over-age players. Makes you wonder whether we will lose Son again for either patriotic or national service reasons again.

Must admit, if he has been exempted, I've never noticed.

what deluded fans... Their team is shit and were pretty close to going through arguably the toughest group in the competition.

It seems the opening to our season is going to be especially tough, knackered WC players, having to play 3 ? away games and now this

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min is set to miss the first four games of the Premier League season after being called up to the South Korea squad for the Asian Games. (Mirror)

They have to win for him to be exempt right? Might be tough, Japan had some great players. Sonny's going to need to play the tournament of his life.

Time for Lucas and Lamela to step up for us though!

It's 3 Prem away games but 7 out of 8 away games if you include pre-season. We have away games against Roma, Barca and Milan spanning west to east coast US for a lot of the squad. Even when we get back, our last game is in Spain a week before the big kickoff. Let's hope the players can stay fully relaxed and energised by the travel and fun places they will visit.

the tour won't involved the WC players though... Will be mostly youngsters and the players who weren't in the WC e.g. Lucas, Lamela, Davies & etc

They've had the whole Summer off. Don't think the tour should be too taxing for em

Fear not Chiv, Lamela is still here and no doubt buoyed by the news of a new contract, he’ll be ecstatic to do more 'running around a lot' for them too! Lol.

The whole squad needs some decent, fresh faces.

Every top manager will say that you have to keep freshening things up otherwise it all goes stale, we seem to have had the same 11 for years, and it never wins anything.

It's an under 23 Asian games and Son is 26. He is one of 3 over age players allowed. The games is not Fifa recognised so we don't have to let Son go.

But we have been freshening things up, the problem is our choices haven’t been good enough to mirror the financial outlay we have made or threaten our established order for a starting place. We need our coaches to be right about Grealish, to change that trend.

Hell we need Lamela...it isn’t as if we have anybody coming in!

We have needed for some time a player with a presence and superior skill level to accomplish the many defining match situations, Lamela and his incompetence usually gets wrong.

If we don't he stands zero chance of being excused from military service. Stop him going and we have the most devaluing asset possible - a £50M player who will have to quit football in a season or so.

This has been true since Modric left.
