Some fans wanting Jed sacked

I don't remember Hess being pilloried. He just couldn't cut it second time around. He was spared this silly "sack him" rubbish that JED is getting for a long time BECAUSE he was a legend as a player and did well first time round (IMO). To be slating JED at this stage is silly. I'd give him at least this season and would accept a top 10 finish as being OK.
 
I can't see many posts slating Jed, equally I can't see many posts saying he should be sacked immediately, in fact the campaign against Hess was much worst, even the second time round Hess never finished lower than 8th place yet you are suggesting he couldn't cut it.
 
We all have different expectations. I just hope for some decent games to watch, ideally plenty of goals and any success is an unexpected bonus. On that basis Hess did OK for me but 7-4 defeats at Accrington and 5-4 at Bury were more than some could stomach.

Unless we sell Dack or another player in January JEd should be safe. I see little reason to sack him yet. What needs to be taken into account is he still has about eighteen months to go on his contract, then there is the cost of a new managers possible compensation and new coaching staff being signed to replace the ones the new man doesn't want. Overall the cost could be prohibitive. I don't particularly want JEd to go and I don't think we can afford it.

If that's the case then we need to tie him down to a longer contract. He's regarded as one of the brightest young English managers currently in employment. There's a reason for that. There aren't many other options out there who Gillingham can realistically get. He's a manager on an upward curve without a doubt. Some should be careful for what they wish for. Gills 'fans' never cease to amaze me.

I see where our coming from jogills, but equally a 5 - 0 at Scunthorpe wasn't good, at least the games you mention we scored some goals.

I do find it strange the way some people are so forgiving of Jed, yet Hessenthaler who was a legend as a player is still pilloried as a poor manager. With that in mind I looked up the career stats for some of our recent managers.

Andy Hessenthaler. 509 games win rate 44.6%
Mark Stimson. 466 games win rate 44.2%
Martin Allen. 524 games win rate 41.41%
Justin Edinburgh 439 games win rate 41%
Tony Pullis. 995 games win rate 36.38%

Using career stats is hugely misleading when comparing success at Gillingham. Any reason why Taylor wasn't included in the figures? Considering he got promoted in his first season for us, I suspect he has an excellent average over the two spells. He had a decent record the second time around too even if the football was hardly Tina taka... And Tony Pulis at the bottom?? One promotion and built the foundations for Taylor and Hess to have success and dismissed as a poor manager....

(The cynic in me suspects it is purely a coincidence that the above stats are set up in a way to "prove" Hess is our greatest manager ever)

As some else said, Hess's stats for us covers two spells - he got a lot of leeway in the Championship years but jumped ship.when the rot had set in and ultimately left it to Tennant to have the relegation against his name. The second time around, he spent 250k in league two but then failed to get us up with some dire results. He was criticised because the results did not live up to the spending (plus his reliance on old experienced professionals who were getting past it rather than giving youth a chance)
 
The stats I gave are for their career not just Gillingham, I left PT out as he had England, under 21, and other spurious appointments.
 
Jesus this GOF bollox really has to stop. None of them will go on to achieve anything in management. Anyone would have looked better after Peter Taylor.
 
Not really bollox at all; it was a lot of fun. Gills fans need to enjoy it while they can because a good thing never lasts. I couldn't care less what anyone achieves later. We've had some fun under JED, not so much just presently.
 
I remember us being more exciting under GOF and also very lucky getting the rub of the green. It was okay as an interim solution but could have gone horribly wrong and almost certainly would have done over time.

I wouldn't say I'm in a pro-Jed camp but the people insisting we should be challenging for top two with our squad should wait until we actually get to use the squad properly before throwing the baby out with the bath water. I'm not sure our squad is one of the best two in the division personally. The call to disrupt a promotion push if we're only sixth at Christmas is laughable.
 
Best league finish in what...ten years?...and our fans have delusions of grandure. I think last year seems far worse because of how it happened. Most teams have ups and downs over the course of the year but we had one half of sheer brilliance by another of medicrity. Had we been like all those other teams, flowing up and down over the course of the season, I don't think fans would be nearly this angry.

JED should get the whole season, unless we somehow end up battling relegation. Which I can't see.

Whatever.

It's a player's game. If found a quote from him interesting the other day. He said; 'Formations don't win you games, players do'. Couldn't be more true. Doesn't matter what formation you play, if Josh Wright isn't where he's supposed to be (which has happened far too much) the formation isn't going to work.

I have coached sport for a long time. It's my job to put player's in a position to succeed. Once they're in that position it is down to them whether they do or not. Then you absorb criticism (not always correctly) when it goes badly, then deflect the praise on to your players who (quite rightly) deserve it for putting in the shift and doing what they were supposed to.

Last season was a combination of poor play, mistakes by players, injuries to some key guys and a little bit of tactics no doubt. To pin this on JED is idiotic.
 
In general, you are quite right. However, is that to say playing our striker, Cody McDonald behind our goalkeeper fit in with your theory? Cos that is what this manager has made his players do!
