Looks to me like a bag of shite of probable realistic options. Couple that with an unbalanced squad with questionable quality in terms of players signed.

MEH and indeed TROUBLE

I have a feeling that when the next victim is appointed I will end up thinking I wish we had kept Smith , even though yesterday I was 50/50 on getting rid.

Smith was a below average manager who made our squad look bad, his big ambition was to get us into the top half so he won't be hard to succeed. To put that into perspective Vieira already has tin pot Palace in the top half and he isn't even talking about it as an achievement. Lage has Wolves in 8th. Smith was drab and over hyped here because he was a Villa fan. They could put the names of those possible replacements in a hat and pick one and we'd be better off.

The thing is that we can pick holes in every managerial candidate out there, none of them will be the 'perfect' candidate all of them will have failings.

Even when Smith was originally appointed I thought it would be a total disaster, but seeing how he operated, hearing him speak, and seeing us at our best (when we were at our best) won me over. After Bruce, I wanted a manager who would get us prepared for a match, and I don't think Smith could ever be accused of poor preparation, sure we lost, but that's part of the game.

The more I think about it, as long as we get a manager who will prepare our team properly, has a good eye for detail in the game, and comes across as a likable character then I'll be happy. There will be risk with any candidate.

I like what Potter has done at Brighton, but it's taken a couple of years - is he going to be able to do that in a couple of months with us. For me, I'm thinking it's Gerrard's for the taking, but really don't know if it's the correct appointment - he has the name but can he keep the respect and get us playing attractive, competitive football? Erik ten Hag sounds unachievable, but probably the best fit for ambitious owners. I've always loved the "Ajax way" and would love to see that happen at Villa, we now have the base of youngsters who can fit into that model and come through imho, but would he leave Ajax??

11 games in so let's see where Palace and Wolves are at the end of the season before any adulation. Where were we 11 games in last season? . Where were Sheff United after 11 games 2 years ago?.

That is typical knee jerk, short termism flavour of the month stuff that goes on nowadays in what you have said about Vieira and Lage.

Never thought he was overhyped, got the feeling we all wanted him to do well - particularly as it would mean the team was doing well. Haven't seen much of Wolves or Palace, so couldn't comment on their styles and whether it appeases the fans. Southampton were near the top this time last season and fell away so every team can have a good run, but the league won't lie in May. Therefore can't judge managers over 10 games - Dean has been judged on his last 40 games by all accounts.

Ralf Rangnick would be a fantastic appointment. I don't know if he would take the job but he almost invented what we are trying to achieve.
Just looked at his stats and he has only been a manager for 2 seasons out of the last 10, win percentage is very good but only signed latest contract as manager of sports and development in July.

Wonder if other clubs in trouble this time last year were saying, ‘Look at Dean Smith, he’s beaten Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal and got Villa in the top 6!‘ That’s exactly where we were 12 months ago. You could argue that fact puts your post in perspective. Such a comparison will be valid this time next year, not two months into the season as Smith’s exit yesterday highlights. Have to say highlighting the achievements of Vieira and Lage eleven games in to justify how useless Smith is, is probably the most left field yet! And if you think it’s as simple as putting names in a hat and pulling one out to ensure we’ll definitely be better off, I think you‘re living in cloud cuckoo land tbh especially with the list of possible replacements currently being bandied about.

I don't think he particularly wants to be a manager anymore though
He's far happier in the DOF role he's been doing for the Red Bull clubs in Germany and Austria. He's who we should have got in after Suso was binned instead of Lange.

For the life of me I can't see why we would go for Hassenhutl. He's done nothing of note at Southampton except keep them up. That is nowhere near the level we should be aiming at. At least when Lambert was appointed he'd just had Norwich wipe the floor with us. Same for similar managers.

What we need is:
  • Successful experience in managing in the upper reaches of a major European league.
  • A least some experience of the European competitions.
  • A clear style of play which fits in with what we're trying to do at Villa.
  • Reputation for coaching and developing players.
  • Reputation for bringing through young players.
  • Capable of inspiring a team, and having players play with a smile on their face.
  • Results driven.
  • Has never heard of Small Heath.
  • Has always wanted to manage Villa.
I don't believe any of the rumours around, like 4-person shortlists. I don't blame the journos, they have to write something.

You've just ruled out every single manager on the world database! Error - results found =0!

With Dean Smith's departure from Aston Villa on Sunday, we can now expect to be inundated with spurious managerial links for the next few days. You have to hope the board have acted with a plan already in mind and will act quickly to bring our new man in, as simply put, I'm not sure I can stomach the media endlessly linking us with the likes of John Terry and Steven Gerrard. Worst still, someone tries to credibly mention Sam Allardyce, Tony Pulis or Neil Warnock.

Won't be surprised if someone reminded you to wait until the season ended to judge Dean vs those you mentioned. If I am not wrong, at least some if not many were saying something to the effect of Viera will take Palace down as it is his first managerial job and had out of contract players after Roy left.
