Skoorb on the Spot - City 0 Everton 0

Skoorb

Alert Team
Manuel Pellegrini and his team endured a frustrating night at the Eithad courtesy of some crucial saves from Tim Howard, resilient defending from the Toffee outfield and two awful decisions from referee Roger East.

City started the game without David Silva in the starting line up and Fernando partnering Toure in central midfield. The job of marshalling Lukaku was left once again to City's only fit centre backs and all in all they did a decent job. Otamendi gave no quarter and overall City seemed to be pressing higher and quicker than they did a week ago. In a tense which saw both sides probing and undergoing periods of decent possession City almost fell behind to an outstanding strike from the under-rated Osman. Joe Hart was rooted to the spot and Sky Blue fans watching with hearts in their mouths his exquisitely struck volley shaved the paint off the upright and thankfully went wide. Phew. In response City's best chance came when Toure's powerful headers drew an excellent save from Tim Howard. Basic showed a return to form with a tackle which caught Aguero. Thankfully no injury but also no change from the officials who saw nothing wrong. He was to repeat his assault on Sergio at the start of the second half as City broke with Everton's defenders stranded upfield. No escape this time as his cynical foul earned him a yellow card and took some of the heat out of his game.

There was little to separate the sides at halftime but the second half saw Everton repel wave after wave of City attacks. Manuel Pellegrini sent his players out fired up as they set about their task with verve. Everton backs were to the wall and they defended as if their lives depended on it with bodies being thrown at crosses and shots from all quarters. Goal bound shots from Navas, Sterling and Aguero were thwarted by royal blue shirts desperately making blocks and tackles. The Saviour of England's Defence the footballing wonder known as John Stones appeared to pick top a crippling injury just as City were starting to build up a head of steam. Down he went in his own half although his team mates did't seem overly concerned as they continued to attack & it was only when City were in possession was the game stopped. Odd that. He was later to make a miraculous recovery.

De Bruyne was withdrawn with some 15 minutes to go and replaced by David Silva. He immediately started to move through the gears and make things happen - drawing Everton players to him like wasps round a jam pot. Spaces emerged and Sergio started to get he service he craves. and then we come to the late drama and the involvement of Roger East. Having earlier denied City a penalty when Funes Mori grappled with Aguero doing just enough to affect his play before letting go with Aguero then unable to get decent contact on the the ball and Tim Howard much closer to close the angle, Roger East chose to take even more positive action in denying even more obvious penalties. That one I could give the rest, Mori let go just in time and Aguero got a shot off. Hmmm. Ok but......

As the clock wound down and injury time approached Aguero received the ball on the edge of the Everton penalty area. Stones had gotten too tight and as Aguero turned him and pushed off into the box Stones opted to go for the 'Oops I stumbled and just happened to hang on to this player' - Roger East waved play on. He then topped this when Stones went to ground in the last minute of the game as Sterling pushed passed him towards the dead ball line. Making no contact with the ball only with Sterling the referee opted to deny one of the more blatant penalties I have seen in a long time. If that isn't deserving of a spot kick I'm not sure what is. Hope the Assessor marks him down accordingly. Unbelievable Jeff.

With Leicester winning and the Tarquins being pegged back late on by the People's Champions City remain in third place and three points off the pace. This was a hard fought game against an opposition that are underrated at your peril and City remain well placed as we progress through a busy January.

Make no mistake though - on this showing the return leg of the League Cup semi final could be a cracking game.

Let's just hope we don't get Roger East.

It could give Everton a boost in their defending Skoorb as they don't have to score, I think Pellers may have to change tactics on this.

Good summing up Skoorb.

Gutted about that penalty shout, no guarantee we'd score of course but it feels like we were robbed of 2 points.

Good team performance I thought, a few heart in mouth moments in the first half, they're tidy in possession but we dominated the second, just couldn't find that killer touch.

22/5 shots on goal/target to Evertons 7/2, for them this was a rehearsal for the second leg and it will be how they play next time.

What gets me is that Charlie N on sky says that the ref got everything spot on. Waiting for the shout in the highlights on sky as we speak

Everton have lost just one of their 10 Premier League away games this season (W3 D6)
This was only Everton's second Premier League clean sheet in their past eight games
Man City had 22 shots but only five of them were on target
Everton had two shots on target, the second of them coming in the 18th minute
Sergio Aguero has scored in just four of his 14 Premier League appearances this season and just once in his past five PL games
Joe Hart made his 250th Premier League appearance for Man City in this game www.bbc.co.uk/football

It's stonewall Buzz. East let some things go too, there was one from Otamendi that could've been a yellow to be fair but Barry got away with a blatant handball to stop our counter early on and then a short while later got away with pulling Sterling back when he was in a good position, both could have been yellows.

Skoorb has described the Mori/Aguero incident exactly as I saw it. The Aguero/Stones/Jagielka incident I'm not sure was in the box but between them they contrived to bring Aguero down, nothing doing from East. The Sterling one is just **cking ridiculous though, it's disgusting that Nicholas can't hide his bias there, I'm sick to death of Sterling getting nothing from refs too.

Right have seen both incidents, Sergio was outside area but didn't get a free. sterling silver was nailed on Sky says that RS7 didn't appeal, I don't know that he had to, to get a penalty. He is not playing **cking cricket

Thanks for the match report Skoorb, I just felt neither team were destined to score, but the foul on RS was a pen all day long. Just hope we can pick up again and give Palace a drubbing. Arsenal will stall, they always do.

I've lost all respect for Roberto Martinez:

"We have been on the back end of receiving a penalty, in the last seconds against Stoke," said the Spaniard.

"Stones goes to slide to block the ball, Sterling does not play the ball and waited. In my eyes it is an area that is not certain if it's a penalty or not.

"I believe the referees should control their emotions and the referee did exactly that. It is impossible to be 100% certain and I am pleased he did this and showed his maturity."

Cheats!

Good call on the Jagielka/Stones grapple on Aguero - just on the edge of the area but still a foul as they impeded him. I believe that is contrary to the laws of the game.

Martinez is playing the game and sucking up to the referees - had that been at the other end on Lukaku or Kone he would have been bleating on about how "we never get the decisions, it is always in the favour of the bigger teams". It's got nothing to do with emotion and it doesn't matter if Sterling "does not play the ball", he was past Stones whose tackle brought down his opponent inside the box. If he makes that tackle outside the box when a player "does not play the ball" it is a free kick ffs.

The failure not to book Barry for either the handball or obstruction of Sterling were telling. After Besic was booked for his cynical hack at Aguero I noticed that he was much less aggressive in his approach. Had Barry been carded for his deliberate handball then perhaps he would have thought twice before holding Sterling.......who knows what could have happened after that.

Sterling has gotten **ck all from officials this season and I am not aware that he has had a reputation as a serial diver.

They're stacking up now, that one last night, the one on Aguero at Leicester, the one on Sterling at Arsenal and of course the one on Navas at Everton last week.

This needs screaming from the rooftops otherwise we'll continue to get **ck all from these incompetent ( beginning to believe corrupt ) c**ts.

The BBC report is so decidedly "plucky Everton perform a masterclass" biased that I nearly threw my iPad over the balcony on which I am currently sat (at work I hasten to add).

Didi Hammann's take on the penalty shout:-

"Man City were hard done by in the end. Sterling takes on Stones and halfway through the tackle Stones realises he can't get to the ball, but his momentum on the wet pitch means he slides in. There was contact - it should have been a penalty."

The key bit is the very last sentence - if there was contact it should have been a penalty.

Surprised they printed it. Clearly he is not "on message".

Their reporter's view on the matter was far more biased and mealy mouthed....

"vain calls for a penalty for Stones' admittedly risky sliding challenge on Sterling."

It was a clear foul so why don't you have the gonads to call it?

We had this feeling a few years ago when the knives were first out for the upstart club who dared to threaten the hegemony of the Sky 4.

I have been resisting it but I have to say that it's not a surprise you feel that way BD. The evidence is mounting and I am starting to wonder - we are not getting the calls.

More comment from Martinez on the penalty shout in here:

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-city-incredulous-pellegrini-ridicules-10731182

He's effectively saying Sterling cheated, come on we can't take this lying down, Sterling should demand an apology from Martinez and East.

He makes it sound like it happened in slow motion and is well out of order. Martinez used to hold my respect but he has been dropping further and further in my estimation for a while now. He is clearly trying to taint things in his favour as he could have taken the Wenger Option and claimed not to have seen it. But he has decided to come up with some cock and bull explanation and the bit about 'intent' is utterly laughable - there doesn't have to be intent to commit a foul, just contact. Stones went to ground to block a cross, fine, BUT he caught his opponent. Foul. Whether he intended to do so is irrelevant.

I detest this sort of manipulation and he has started engaging in it quite a lot. It is intended to warp the views of officials as he sucks up to them and portrays himself and his club as victims. Fifth has called it right in his motm post - he should stfu and just admit that they got the decision on this occasion. However I see a different agenda here - he is trying to manipulate opinion and influence officials.

We need to thump this lot good and proper in two weeks time

Sterling has gotten **ck all from officials this season and I am not aware that he has had a reputation as a serial diver.

Fairly certain that Sterling was the most fouled player in the league last season when he played for the People's Champions.

Strange how that seems to have changed now he plays for us

This was Martinez after the last gasp penalty given against them in their home defeat to Stoke by a referee with some balls....

Everton manager Roberto Martinez on Stoke's penalty: "Looking at the replay it shows John Stones touches the ball. That decision is hard to take. To get a decision wrong like that so late in the game makes you feel furious and is unacceptable."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/35148469

Not so supportive of the referee there now is he?

I tell a lie. Sterling was only the second most fouled player in the league last season

2nd most fouled player when he wore a Liverpool shirt, not even in the top 10 most fouled in a City shirt. I'm surprised the refs don't join in with the oppo fans in booing him.

This morning on Talkshite they had Keith Hackett on to discuss the refereeing incidents last night. The worse ones were at the Swansea Sunderland game but he then turned to our game and confirmed in his view the Stones on Sterling incident was a nailed on, stonewall pen and he couldn't understand how East didn't give it.
