I'm saddened and shocked to hear this awful news abart Sir Chris Hoy.I'm not a big Cycling fan but this fella always comes across as a top bloke when i've seen him on't telly and obviously was a superb competitor who won 6 Olympic Gold medals.UTB

Really sad news and devasting for the family. It does make me laugh when they advise Men to get their prostrate checked. I have tried that only to be talked out of it before I have forced them to book me a blood test, but with a 4 week wait time.
My message to all of you is to get checked but to insist on it. It is made to sound like an easy process but the GP's will try anything not to do it.
We have all been paying NI for many years and should not be ignored.

I have a yearly check up at the quacks when they send for me, only time I ever go. My 78,000 service coming up usually done by the practice nurse which involves blood test and blood pressure check. If I don,t hear back, it,s carry on regardless until 79,000 service next year, ignorance is bliss so stay clear in case they find summat I did,nt know about. A mate o mine went to his quacks for his yearly service and Doc asked, "O tha sleepin oreight?" "Yes", "O tha eatin oreight?" "Yes", Docs summary, "Well f..ck off then, cos thaz oreight!" Never had a scan in my life but when the wife had one in her early 70s as a result of spinal probs she found out that she only had one kidney. Dread to think what they,d find if I ever had a brain scan!

May I reinforce that.
I was very lucky. I went to the doctor about a frozen shoulder, but just before setting off, I heard an item on the radio about getting a PSA test, which I’d never ever heard of before.
Although I was sure I wouldn’t have cancer, I asked for one while I was there.
My doctor rang me the next day and things progressed from there. A biopsy (not very pleasant) revealed I had “very aggressive” prostate cancer - stage 3. A short time later it would have become stage 4 and I wouldn’t be here now. That was over 12 years ago.

So yes lads, if you’ve not already done so, get a test - it could save your life - it did mine!

Spot on BFL! Bowel cancer screening was only introduced weeks before my 60th birthday. I had mine and tested positive following a biopsy after a couple of inconclusive results. Because it was picked up early it was still stage one, and I was fortunate enough to just need a few inches of bowel removing. If it hadn't been picked up so early, we were talking Chemotherapy and colostomy bag at best.
I was so lucky how it all fell into place but that apart, the facts are that Bowel and Prostate cancer are imminently curable if caught early and so not taking the tests when available is just plain balmy.

I hope nothing he took during his career is to blame for causing it. I know Lance Armstrong had such suspicions with his own cancer.

Sadly your suspicions are well founded regarding the win at ALL costs attitude in todays professional sporting arena. The corinthean attitude of fair play and may the best man win as dead as the fabled DODO. It,s more like may the competitor with the most knowledgeable pharmacist win!

Just realised at a normal league game at BDBL, on average 2800 will succumb to Prostate Cancer.
We will all succumb to something. 'Saving lives' is a term often used especially by politicians and charities, when it is in fact 'Delaying the inevitable'. My mantra is live and enjoy every day to its fullest. Sooner or later, you run out of days...

That,s a brill mentality to have regarding the subject of individual lifespan and how long you can expect to survive because it all depends on so many factors. I.E. Lifestyle, genetics handed down through your family tree and mainly and most importantly fate. Having served in many dangerous places where many comrades have perished long before their natural lifespan I class myself a lucky bastard and cherish every living moment and if I kippered tomorrow I,ve had more than a good run. The thing that pisses me off most is the terrible scourge of the drug culture that effects all walks of life, particularly the young. Bastards getting rich out of other peoples misery which includes the addicts family and friends. Life should be rated on quality rather than quantity!
