I've a mate who's a professional snooker player (struggling admittedly) so I follow snooker and it's refreshing when an amateur knocks out a pro, a bit like a non league team knocking out a league team in the FA Cup. I remember Ronnie O' Sullivan saying that most of the amateurs he could beat one handed, then he got knocked out of the world championship in the first round by 500/1 rank outsider James Cahill......loved it!!
To be fair, he did say "most" of them, he obviously forgot to mention that Cahill wasn't in that elite groupI've a mate who's a professional snooker player (struggling admittedly) so I follow snooker and it's refreshing when an amateur knocks out a pro, a bit like a non league team knocking out a league team in the FA Cup. Love it GBN, Shaun Meldrew. Lol.Are we supposed to believe that Shaun Meldrew earns so little prize money and sponsorship that he struggles to put food on the table if he loses to an amateur rather than a low ranking professional?
Interesting that he claims he was carrying an injury as well. I would guess that if this incident reflects what he is like as a person, it is probably a wrist injury.
Phew that was an exhaustive read WX, are you writing his biography! and what do the numbers in brackets indicate?Murphy was born in Harlow and grew up in Irthlingborough. He was home-schooled from age 13 after being bullied at school,[4][12] and his parents split up when he was 14. He lived with his father Tony, a former professional golfer, and did not see his mother again until he was 19.[4][227] During the 2007 World Championship, it was reported that he had developed a rift with his father, who was a member of the World Snooker board.[228][229] He said that they had not spoken in over a year, but that he would willingly speak to his father again if the other called him.[229]
Murphy moved to Rotherham during the 2004 season to be with his fiancée, Clare,[34] whom he married in July 2005.[43] Murphy's wife filed for divorce in 2009 on the grounds of infidelity after The People newspaper published an exposé revealing he had spent the night with an escort girl he had met at a religious youth group. Murphy's then manager, Brandon Parker, issued a statement confirming that Murphy had slept with the woman but denied he had been unfaithful, stating that Murphy did not have sex with her.[94][230] He also dated Claire Chorlton, who was first introduced to the viewing public backstage during the final of the 2012 UK Championship.[231] Murphy became engaged to his girlfriend Elaine, after proposing marriage at a restaurant in her native Ireland during Christmas 2014.[citation needed] The couple married in June 2016, and have since had a son.[232] The family moved to Dublin, Ireland in 2018.[233]
Murphy became a Christian at the age of 15, after meeting a religious family on holiday.[12][234] Murphy is well known for his charitable nature, having spent some of the summer of 2006 doing aid work in Zimbabwe with his then wife, Clare.[235] He also donated one-tenth of his 2005 World Championship winnings to the church,[12] and at the 2012 World Snooker Championship Murphy donated £100 to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital Charity for every century he made.[236]
Murphy is currently based in Dublin with his family.[237]
I'd guess references to the sources of the information in the index at the end of the book it's taken from.Phew that was an exhaustive read WX, are you writing his biography! and what do the numbers in brackets indicate?
I was trying to show he's had a troubled life and i think he was "lashing out" due to insecurity.I spent 3 days last week doing conservation work (unpaid of course) and have direct debits to charities. So what.
My apologies wxgill if I've got the wrong end of the stick (or should I say, cue).
Sounds like the bloke is a bit mixed up tbh.

He may have lost some of his fortune after his divorce. He's been a pro for around 20 years. Former world champion, still a top-5 ranked player. He chose to go public with his thoughts on amateurs playing in tournaments ... after being beaten by an amateur. He may well have always held those beliefs, but of all the times he could've chosen to voice them...
"This is our livelihood. This is how I put food on the table. This is how I earn money."
He's made more than £3.5m in his career. I suspect his kids aren't going to go hungry if he loses in the first round to an amateur.
Incidentally, he didn't seem to have a problem with amateurs playing tournaments when he tried to qualify for golf's Open Championship a couple of years ago - https://www.bbc.com/sport/av/golf/48752528
Oh dear oh dear, it's happened again. Today Neil Robertson ranked No1 and defending champion got knocked out by the amateur John Astley 6-2. It's so unfair!!
