The Austin MacPhee Thread

I can confirm that Melon pooch and I have never discussed Villa‘s need of set piece improvement.

Not even corners?

Someone snapped Mcphee measuring up the corners before kick off. Can't say I've noticed him doing this at Villa Park but perhaps ge only needs to do it once per ground?

I think there were a few people wondering if hiring a specialist set piece coach was a waste of time but you can't deny we've improved our delivery from corners and free kicks. We are a real danger.

McPhee has been one of the signings of the season. People are seeing the goals we’re creating from chances where we isolate big men and nod it back across, and that’s just a part of it. The way we’re setting up from throw ins for example, attacking and defending, is a level above anything I’ve seen. I’ve noticed it at the home games and watching the United game now, we’re much more orchestrated than anything I’ve ever witnessed. Where everyone is starting from positionally is a very detailed exercise, and it’s how we are able to stay in games with top teams.

The guy is revelation and he’s a thoroughly top bloke from personal experience of bumping into him.

And he gets bonus points for looking like a Bee Gee.

He has made a massive difference imho. Marginal gains and all that , but if we get say 10 goals + from set pieces this season it could mean many more points.

Credit to Deano for getting him in as well.
Bingo! As much as I recognize the "respect" aspect of having someone like Terry at the club, Dean Smith has been very astute in adding to the staff this season - a set-piece coach and an attacking coach. He's seen areas where we can improve and has made positive steps to address things.

Signing of the season?

He actually might be. It's actually just unfortunate its gotten so much attention because you'll have teams coping us and/or anticipating it now. I can't believe it was met with such ridicule especially from analysts who think they're experts in the field.

The fantastic thing about the ridicule from someone like Danny Murphy is that means there are teams out there with people like him making decisions. McPhee might be our set-piece coach but you can bet he influence and insight isn't limited to just set-pieces.

He probably knows who is weak in the air, who has poor concentration, who doesn't mark well and you can leverage all of this into open play too. The opposition's right-back might concentrate poorly from corners. Maybe that means you can isolate him in the game too and exploit that deficient concentration.
