Selling Wembley

The Fear

A Wise Man (once sat next to him)
Thoughts? Anyone care? Think they are just trying to get some guarantees that finals will still be able to played there. You would think that anyone buying it would be desperate for them to still be there, it's where the money is surely?

I didn't think it should have been kept there when we re-built to be fair, the area is awful (what an impression for foreign visitors/or any visitors to London for that matter) and the traffic/parking/access woeful.

I like what Pete Colley just tweeted

As I said in the other thread, when I first read the headline I thought ‘How can they sell Wembley?!’ But when I read into it, they’ve only owned Wembley for just under 20 years so it’ll just be going back to private ownership as it was for many years before. Khan has said its under utialised and needs upgrades (Even though it’s a new stadium) so let him waste his money on it rather than the FA who can better spend the money on grassroots and just putting money back into the game in general as they should be. Getting the England games around the country and the fa cup semis at Villa Park and old Trafford again is another plus.

If done right it could be a very good deal.

If done wrong..... look at Coventry for an example.

Obviously a bit different given its not a club and the FA's involvement but just saying if the contract isn't water tight it could come back to bite at some point if the new owner decides to be an arse.

I think people are missing the point. If we sell it, England will still play the majority of their games there. There wont be a new stadium.

The bid also include the Club Wembley business so I can't see the internationals , finals etc being moved because loads join Club Wembley to enable them to get tickets for those games.

It's already been confirmed that the League Cup Final and Playoff Finals will remain there.

Pretty safe to assume FA Cup Final and most internationals will follow.

What like the Commonwealth Games -where is the parking at the Alexander Stadium if it is enlarged to 45,000, where are the transport links. Been said for years - NEC is the place

This nostalgia/idea that Wembley is still the traditonal home of English football i struggle with.

The name is. But a stadium that bears no resemblance or has any visible link to it predecessor makes it a stadium that happens to built on the site of the old Wembley.

Imagine if they completely knocked down Villa park and built a generic bowl type stadium like Pride park or Stadium of light on the site and called it Villa Park.

They will never build another stadium for England out of London so best scenario is England going round the country to play.

When the news first broke, it was suggested that major finals and certain England games would be protected, and because the stadium was expected to be used in the autumn/winter for NFL (possibly all of the 'Jacksonville' Jaguars home games), it would mean Wembley would not be available to England for qualifiers and friendlies so they would revert to touring round the 'regions' like before.

I think it's not a bad idea to sell. With certain guarantees it should work out. My main concern would be the idea of have the american whatever it is team based there....let's face it, that game is crap!
