Second Lockdown

I was looking at the graphs on the slides being shown at Downing Street and the lines all seemed to be low from mid July to late September when they suddenly all go alarmingly upward. Allowing for the slight delay for infections to take hold, it left me wondering what changes happen in mid September? Beats me.

Anyway, good to see that the universities are being allowed to continue:

What’s the risk of spreading coronavirus at university?

Unlike the March lockdown, universities will not be required to close during this new period of tougher restrictions.
On 21 September, government advisory group Sage recommended that all university teaching should be moved online unless absolutely essential. The group has suggested closing universities would have a “moderate impact” on transmission, as the high level of close contact students have at university – through shared halls, socialising and during lectures – makes outbreaks very likely.
This has proved to be the case; within weeks of students returning to university, about 40 universities had reports of coronavirus, with thousands of students having to self-isolate. Many universities have been switching tuition online.

It won't matter then if I die as I won't be around anyway. I have never understood this obsession with Christmas, being obliged to be happy, and face the ordeal of spending time with the extended family. I have always preferred the New Year celebrations, time spent with friends has always been better.
Well said.
I'm already fed up with hearing about Xmas. The most boring day of the year imo (no sport). Most families can meet at other times anyway.

Shielding the elderly is ok when they're with a spouse/partner etc but what about the lone ones? My mum is 76 and a widow, if we had shielded until a vaccine comes along, that would be over a year stuck indoors with no company. The mental and physical health implications are massive with no stimulus or exercise.
Schools staying open works as long as the kids and their parents stick to the rules and don't mix households or there are no serious underlying health problems so I don't see a problem with that.
The news over the last few weeks has been hilarious. Until today, the only people/politicians/medical experts to be interviewed are the supporters of a nationwide lockdown or "circuit break". Sky tonight are only interviewing small business owners and medical experts that are anti lockdown. Thats balanced reporting for ya.

Happy lockdown (but not actually a lockdown) people.

Schools remaining open is a debateable one IMO. My own daughters school had 3 teachers and 4 students (over 2 year groups) test positive for Covid in the week before half term. As a result the school was shut for two weeks (luckily one of them being half term) and as a result of the positive tests the hundred students in each of the 2 year group's (a year group is a bubble) with positive Covid cases were told to self isolate for 14 days. Try keeping an 8 year old amused for 14 days without going outside.

There is no guarantee that as soon as they go back on Monday they don't have to repeat that process, once, twice, thrice over the next few weeks and months. Yes kids not going to school is not ideal, but telling kids, especially primary school kids they can't go out AT ALL for two weeks is affecting their mental health. It's a tough call between keeping them home with internet learning but able to go out or have them go to school but risk them repeatedly having to self isolate for 14 days.

The teachers well-being seems to be being forgotten in all this too. Not sure the union's will agree with schools and teachers being put at risk. If you look at the % of primary and secondary schools operating without Covid enforced absence (of pupils and teachers) its clear schools cannot just 'carry on'.

If you went and stood in the school playground and watch some of the parents carry on, you'd struggle to believe Covid even existed.

That's ok for those OAPs who can look after themselves. But what about those who need care Gimmer for example perhaps. Kate probably has a lot more than him to look after .She is vulnerable and so in that case are all the people in her care .More so those in care homes.
Thanks for the thoughts and support Chris. Mobile Carers such as myself have been run off our feet ever since the first lockdown and the hours we have to put in now are getting longer by the day. My customers are mainly the elderly who have been as good as gold and I will say that they have almost without exception abided by all the lockdown rules from day 1. Cast your mind back a few weeks ago when all the idiots were crammed on the beach at Bournemouth spreading covid like wild fire - not exactly many 80 plus year olds amongst them.
I went to see Gimmer earlier who sends his regards but was disappointed by the result - I believe you lost 2-0 again? Not being a great footy fan myself but I know most of you are diehard fans through and through.

Absolutely agree Kate, I've said a number of times, if this virus killed the young you can bet your life the elderly would be sticking to the rules to protect them.

If we were to shut universities, next year people will complain there are no doctors or nurses.

I think that is covered by "Sage recommended that all university teaching should be moved online unless absolutely essential".

There are just as many degree courses in such things as Media Studies and Art History, let alone those like law degrees that would seem to be obvious candidates for an online course alternative.

Another lockdown is the right thing to do. Unfortunately it means I've just another job to corona so I bloody hope all the idiots follow it better than they have.

I guess I'll be getting lots of golf practice in then...

Edit: actually golf courses are closed

What a mess.

The lack of test & trace is criminal.

I am anti lockdown, I feel like I’m getting banged up when I’ve not committed a crime. My parents will follow the rules to the letter and last time that meant them not seeing their young grandchildren for 3 months.

I think it’s nailed on that lockdown part deux will go on beyond the beginning of December. “It’s going really well, just a few more weeks etc”

If you believe the stats that are out there only 2% of cases last week were from bars & restaurants yet they need to close. I feel for those proprietors.

A lot of cases are from schools but we can’t close them. It’s not fair to deprive those students of an education.

The simple way to deal with education was to merge the two years into one .Extent standard school age education to 17.That way kids would have been able to have more flexibility.

We have been told everybody over 60 should shield themselves, That could well mean that employees over 60 will never work again, as when they are allowed to return they will be top the redundancy lists if they still have a job. That's hundreds of thousands of votes the Conservatives are likely to lose.

I think they’re going to lose hundreds of thousands of votes regardless

So who are they going to vote for then? The Labour Party, who agree with the decision and in fact wanted to go into lockdown earlier?

I’m already getting sick of Covid deniers during this second lockdown.

The hospitality sector has put in so much effort and new systems to make their establishments safe it's a piss take to shut them down now. 1% of infections can be traced to pubs and restaurants for fuck sake. From encouraging everyone to use these places with 'eat out to help out' to shutting them down a couple of months later.... complete wind up.

One of the reasons we are in this mess is due to years and years of piss poor government and opposition. This cabinet is completely inept, but they don't have to be top of their game to voted in. When all you have to be is slightly less shit than your opponent then this is what you end up with.
