Scunthorpe Vs Plymouth- a reminder of how far we have come

Sometimes, in our state of new found delirium, I think we forget the majority of EFL clubs are still ploughing the same furrow.

Last night at Glumford Park, absolutely critical play-off game between Scunthorpe and Plymouth. Penultimate game of the season- only 4,712 turned up to watch this vital game and the atmosphere was....like most EFL 1 and 2 games are.

In 3 days time, we have a similarly vital game and will experience around 9,500 fans with a loud, bouncing Sincil bank roaring on a team who are 7th in the league.

It wasn't always like this and Glumford Park last night was a stark reminder of just how much has changed in the last 2 years.

Never forget where we came from and where, one day, we may find ourselves again.

600 Plymouth as well I think, so just over 4k home fans.

Not a massive catchment area in Scunny but Scunny just aren't interested in the football team. I was listening to Radio Humberside this morning on my way to work in a hire car, and they went out to get views on Scunny in the PO's and I think only 1 out of the 7 or 8 they found were a Scunny fan. Most weren't interested in football.

Without checking I think there were 14,000 at Plymouth's last home game. It is very much the connection between Club and City/Town which determines attendances when teams are doing well.

Let’s not fall into the trap of being Crowd Nonces. Pride comes before a fall.
I think that was the point of the original posting, ie look at what we have now and appreciate it because at some point in the future we may well return to lower crowds and atmosphere.

It is easy to forget how small Scunthorpe actually is - just 65,163 at the 2011 census, and it has a small catchment area as well. That is almost exactly half of Lincoln's urban population of 130,200. The club is punching way above its weight in that respect - is there a club higher than Scunthorpe in the EFL structure with a smaller population to draw from?

Burton Albion has a similar population... Burnley just a fraction higher. But i agree, punching above its weight for a while.

I was there. Impressed by a Scunny side that was strong and direct,, the Argyle fans were very loud though. A three hundred mile journey for them

Burnley have a great supporter to population ratio, although it is a bit misleading - there are a number of sizeable towns in the immediate vicinity (Padiham, Colne, Nelson, even Accrington) which add around another 100,000 to their catchment area.

Burnley also have a deep routed tradition that bolsters their support, when they played in the fourth tier and for those can remember the Imps v Burnley for quite a few was a staple fixture of that division. Irrespective of how they were doing, their gates were always among the best in the league.

yes... but werent their gates flagging quite a lot prior to the season they escaped on the last day and we didnt. I think that final game scenario gave a boost to the fan base. In fact looking at their attendences historically, they are not as high as i imagined... especially when you think of Lincoln's attendances this year. Which would have been higher than their bottom division attendences if the ground was bigger... see link

Should have been clearer but that was my point- we are experiencing something which none of us have really experienced before at Sincil Bank- certainly not consistently week in, week out and we really need to appreciate this time because it is not a common experience!

Everyone is impressed with what you are doing..I have an article that might interest you but my post will be deleted if I post it on here (twice already!).

Unbelievable the turn around at the club, great to see how the city is united behind the team. Many others should follow suit but I suppose the real test will be if the club go through a rough patch in terms of results.

Good luck in the play-offs
