Satellite TV

BBJ

Father Of The Forum
We don't watch TV all that much so got fed up with lashing out round about €30 extra a month on our phone/broadband contract.
So, a few weeks back, we got someone provide us with a satellite dish, aerial and the usual mix of the obvious Irish and British channels plus the motley miscellany of also rans.
So far, so good, but I was wondering whether, now having a dish, I might be able to tune in to other channels, not currently provided, and, if so, how would I go about it?

show BBJ some love people... advice!?

OK!!!

What have you got the satellite dish connected to? I don't know what the Irish offer, but here there is a Freesat service, that is similar to the Freeview..

Without paying a subscription, I don't think there is anything else you could get, if that's what you've got already.

Let me know more info, if you can.

Hi BBJ,

Here in Spain we have http://www.freesat.co.uk/what-is-freesat that we get through a 1.3 dish.

It works a treat and even in HD.

I would highly recommend going for a good receiver. We use Humax who I personally think are one of the very best... Here is a choice http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=humax+hdr-2000t%2F500gb&tag=googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=24599128614&hvpos=1t2&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9226708232210229971&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_1qw4w0aah0_b

Several Humax box's also allow you to record as well and once you have bought the receiver it's all free!

Good luck.

It's connected to our back wall, Heath......

Seriously, I don't know which satellite the dish is pointed towards.
However, the information page on satellite.ie (from whom we got the system) is attached here - http://www.satellite.ie/acatalog/What_s_on_free_to_air_.html
Of course, another solution might be to use the internet to access other channels and watch them on the telly. But of course, some of them only allow you to access them if you're in the same country.

What do you want to watch? I can highly recommend Netflix and Amazon Prime. With that and kodi I am about to get rid of my sky subscriptions starting with sport.

I am seriously considering getting rid of sky sports. For the amount we watch it, it isn't worth the money

We do have a subscription to Netflix and you're right, Wurzel, it's very good. Amazon Prime is less attractive in Ireland than in the UK for a number of reasons - which I can't bring to mind right now!
Is kodi legal?

The software is legal and has legitimate uses, it can also be used to access unofficial streams, which may or may not be legal, depending on the source.

It's like most things, it's not the tool that's questionable, it's how the tool is used.

I think what the orignal question meant was "I get the channels that I am supposed to get but can I retune it so it gets other stuff that I shouldn't".

I don't know the proper answer, I would imagine, if you were an aerial engineer with all the correct equipment, you may be able to but for the average Joe - almost certainly not.

It's like saying "Can I retune my Sky dish so I can get other channels, like French or German TV" - I suppose you could if you knew what you were doing, but I don't

I always loved the original analogue Sky when you could get all the German stuff

The Amazon fire stick is rapidly becoming my favourite piece of tech. They have just added hundreds of apps that can be installed on it. Real value for money.

Just to clarify, holtetower, I'm not looking to access channels that "I shouldn't"!
For example, one channel I had particularly in mind was "BYUTV" which is Utah-based and is provided by Brigham Young University.
In any case, I already have my paid subscription to Bumbiters United.....

I wish I could help more, BBJ, but I know nothing of what's available in Ireland.

Is BYUTV not online? I can recommend the Discovery Channel as a good alternative. :17:

Heath, you're right, BYUTV is available online so, perhaps in the end, this has turned out to be a pointless thread so apologies to those whose time I may have wasted. :14:

Alright Fella

Kodi is legal and using it is legal for now based on the fact that you are not infringing anyones copyright (you are neither downloading or uploading the file)

I have no doubt it will become illegal due to Sky being a god dam rip off and loads of people turning to Kodi/Android and zGemma boxes

In the meantime feel free to use it. If you need any help setting this up then let me know
