Because if you change jobs from one employer to another - you have to re-apply under our work permit rules. Normally takes about 1-2 weeks, so should be a formality.

I find this mental as well. A professional footballer should not have to go through the usual permit rules in my opinion.

It depends on the player. But I do agree that this should be much easier. Perhaps have an international body of similar countries in a region that have an agreement to let workers smoothly move between each place easily without the need for extensive paperwork each time?

We make money from it, a 4-year+ work permit will raise a fee of around £5,000 + the health surcharge which depending on your profession which can be about the same.

So £8-10k for pushing some paper around and making sure that the employer is liable for all his tax and NI payments.
