Same Old, Same Old

Durham, you are talking out your arse, again. We had spent big sums of money on transfer fees and in big wages (at the time) and long contracts on Paul Smith, Hess, Ashby, Butters, Akinbiyi, SBT and Asaba

The sale of Tony Butler gave the funds to buy Akinbiyi. The sale of Akinbiyi and Corbett for around £1.75m gave us the funds to buy the majority of the promotion side. The sale of Taylor provided the main funds for the likes of Hope and others in the Championship side.

The vast majority of our signings were funded by player sales.

The sales of players (Corbett aside) that we had spent big money on initially. Who did we sell to buy Akinbiyi, Ashby, Smith, Hess?

Anyone know which position Rees played in midfield for Bromley?

He played an attacking midfield role, where he scored 20 goals, presumably in a central position, which is why he kept trying to move in from wide midfield against Wimbledon. Square peg and all that.

And how come we didn’t need to set aside £500k a year from players sales to club running costs back then?

The sale of Tony Butler for £225k, didn't even get close to covering our purchases in the following seasons. Hess came in that summer for a combined £250k, so that was the Butler money spent, but then in the October we signed Guy Butters for 225k and then in the January Akinbiyi came in fir £250k (which Scally must've either borrowed or had shoved down the back of a sofa somewhere as according to Durham PS would never have borrowed money got invest in the playing side, that would be just stupid and if it goes wrong its 's long way back'). I find it hard to believe that we had 500k to invest in players that wasn't borrowed from somewhere, as history has shown we were getting into debt paying the players wages that we couldn't afford.

If you look at our transfer fees paid and recieved between 1996 -2000, we actually made a profit on transfer fees (that's not including the shit load we made on akinbiyi in his sell on clause). The financial issues came obviously with the wages we were paying those players was way beyond what we could afford, oh and ITV digital of course (that wasn't even around until 2000, Durham, but let's do a Scally and blame it anyway).

But I guess Durham is right in one aspect, you borrow money for paying wages or fees or stands you can't afford or afford to pay back, its a long way back and ultimately that is why we are where we our with our current squad.

I don't believe that GFC will ever have any investment or bright future with Scally at the helm, he hasn't got the money, he can't borrow it and can't attract investors on the terms he's offering, but none of GFC's financial problems is down to PS, its everyone else's fault except the **** who was signing the cheques and in charge of the calculator.

Rant over:sorry:

At the end of the first season, we sold just over £300k worth of players of whom the majority was Tony Butler. This bought Hess and Bryant.

When we bought Butters in October, this was around the time we had a selling out 2-2 cup draw with Coventry. Ten thousand tickets at £20 plus food would more than cover the Butters fee.

Akinbiyi in January? Back of the 3rd round FA Cup home tie against Derby. Similar numbers and situation to Butters and the Coventry match.

I am unable to verify how many more season tickets we sold in Pulis's second season as a result of the promotion.

Most transfers after that generally was the reinvestment from the money made from the Akinbiyi and Corbett sales.

What PS clearly forgot to calculate was all of those players were on good money, that we couldn't afford.

So after reading everything on this thread, the only conclusion anyone can come to, is that we will struggle this season, possibly be relegated, hope we come back up,and go through the whole scenario again. The fact is we need an investor that will pour money into the team, but we're unlikely to see that happen with Scally at the helm. Not much of an outlook is it? And to think Brighton used to share our ground. Whatever happened to them?

Problem is for every Brighton there's a Stockport County, Wrexham, York City etc etc. Should we be envious of Brighton or grateful we're not Stockport ? You choose.

I doubt any of those you mention have received the amount of money in transfer fees as we have since PS has been in charge though. Nearly £2m profit on Akinbiyi (including sell on) , £1m of SBT, 500k on Corbett, Jarvis, Gazzaniga,Freeman, Bertrand, Dack, that's just off the top of my head.

Better management of the purse strings and who knows where we might have been, but let's not pretend we wern't close to being a Stockport, Wrexham, York either.

We paid the going rate in terms of wages. If we didn't then we'd only sign non-league players and people on here would moan about only signing players from non-league and we'd be doing a Barnet.

Personally I blame the Premier League and the trickle down of wage level expectations.

Is that not exactly what we are doing now and have continually done since we dropped out of the Championship in 2005?

There is some middle ground. We were paying top dollar in transfers and in wages for the likes of Smith Ashby,Hess, Butters, Asaba, SBT. That was not sustainable without significant investment, which we didn't have and was only going to end one way, it was just a case of how long it took.

One thing's for sure,if somehow gills can't break the cycle of struggle and maybe go down, things will get worse. It's not the diehard fans the club have got to attract ( I guess there's about 3 to 4000 ) but the occasional fans who want to see a winning team. Only investment in the team ( with the financial risks that involves) will see us climb the table and be challenging for a playoff place as Scally keeps saying ,
will achieve that, and see an increase in attendances.

If you couldn't hear the show this is what I got from it...It's clear that the vast majority of fans who attend games are right behind SL. Only polite questioners got on live so maybe the angry ones were declined. He avoided talking about finance or the budget for players and insisted that when he went to the chairman with a target he had got support. The diamond formation came from the GO4 days when they created a team shape around Dack and it worked. It's still his preferred set up for this season. He was very cool on Liam Nash and didn't sound like he was goiing to keep him. He said the group of players were better than last season and there was still a good team spirit. Individual mistakes were costing us games rather than lack of effort. He was confident there was enough quality in the squad to see us improve as players return from injury and everyone sticks to the plans from training. Wants to see his strikers concert more chances obviously mentioning Eaves and Wilkinson. Interesting bit was SL revealing that he was George Grahams first signing!

Hope this helps?

The diamond formation comments are a concern to me, It worked for the first six months under JED but then we got found out. Added to that we had the best player in the league in Dack, and a defender comfortable bringing the ball out of defence in Egan. We haven't got any player near that quality now. We are losing the midfield battle and have no width, we need a bit of variety at times.
