Sam Habergham

Vital Football Legend
Apologies if this has been mentioned but what's is up with him?
Is he injured or been dropped?
I seem to have missed why he has missed the last two games.

Let's hope he has a really good pre season and hits the ground running next year which he has not had the benefit of while here. That combined with competition for his place would hopefully push him on another level.

He’s our only natural lb so another signing in the summer wouldn’t Ben surprising.
With a full pre-season I reckon he could be a championship quality player from what i’ve seen.

Not a chance is he anywhere near good enough for the championship, he has struggled alot this season at times for me. I don't think that is all down to no pre season, I think he has reached his ceiling. Would be happy to keep him as a back up LB, but we definitely need a better option next season. I like Sam as a player and appreciate what he has done for us, but I fear his run as 1st choice LB will end in the summer.

At the Cambridge game away this season I was sat next to some friends of Sam who live in the same village as him. Sam was being given the run around that night and the general concensus was that he had not been the same after his injury, most noticeably he had lost half a yard of pace. His friends also thought the injury had taken its toll on him mentally...

I don’t think Sam has made the step up this year, for whatever reason that may be. If we want to push on, a new first choice LB is required (only my opinion of course)

If he were to be released (I am not suggesting this) I’d be very surprised to see him sign with another club in the Football League.

I think that Sam is a very decent hard working left back. He is injury prone though and that will affect you both physically and mentally over time. I also think that the switch to 4-3-3 has possibly not helped him as it can allow him to be exposed on quick breaks by the opposition. I think he may have missed Terry Hawkridge's work rate from last season.

I would retain him for next season irrespective of which league we are in but have another left back in the squad as competition.

Hardly injury prone. He's play about 50+ games a season for the last, what, 4 or 5 years?

It was probably bound to catch up with him eventually, but having a hernia(?) isn't an injury of someone who's injury prone. The knee injury, if that's what it is, may have been an impact one.

Fair enough, he just seems to be out injured more than other team members over the last couple of seasons which probably says more about how good our coaching team are at keeping players fit and available

He pretty much walked off the pitch against Macclesfield and into hospital for his hernia op last season didn't he? Given we had no proper full back cover once Wood had become unavailable I'd say he performed like a trooper to get us over the line, possibly sacrificing his long term fitness for our tilt at the title.

Most recent games I’ve seen were Exeter at home and Shrewsbury and Port Vale away. Exeter I thought he was excellent going forward. Shrewsbury he didn’t look too hard pushed. And Vale there was no problem either.
I said championship as in when he’s had a pre season and is in form. A league one lb otherwise.

You can tell when Sam isn't 100% as he plays within himself compared to when at his best last season. The Final apart, he hasn't been particularly great since early February and was given the runaround v Cambridge, Crawley and Crewe. Increasingly, after the first 25 minutes, he has not been repeatedly getting forward, like he used to.

A different player when confident, injury free, and fully fit. A chance to turn things around over the summer.

Yes agree with all this! I still think Sam at his best is easily good enough for League 1 and 2

Sam not tough enough mentally??? for a month April last season he could only run at half his fastest pace and played with an injury for a month he had to grit his teeth and play on when it would have been easier to say no more.
Had the op he needed then another straight away recovered then got a contact injury and had to come back from that.
I’d say he is more than mentally tough he’s a very focused individual.

The friend of Sam said he thought the injury had taken it's toll on him mentally not that he was not tough enough mentally.

Amazed by some of the comments here... can only imagine this is the same lobby that thought selling Rhead in the 16/17 close season was a good idea, or that these are fans who haven’t suffered the likes of Joe Anderson or Aaron Brown at left full back.

Habergham is a more than solid defender who very rarely, if ever, has a really bad game. Crawley away was where I saw him struggle most, but he got naff all help from Tom Pett in front of him, and was not the only one to have a stinker that day.

He hasn’t hit the heights of last season, and like many, I think this is tied in with him missing pre-season. Fully expect him to be our first choice LB next season whichever league we’re in. A top pro and part of our DNA along with the likes of Woodyard, Rhead and Waterfall.
