Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool’s spending is completely different to Tottenham last year
By Daniel AnwarPosted on July 30, 2014

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has rejected claims that the club’s transfer activity has been reminiscent of Tottenham’s spending last summer outlining what makes the Reds’ case different, reports Sky Sports.

Tottenham sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world-record fee, and spent heavily on a number of new signings, only to have a relatively disappointing campaign.

Of the new arrivals only Christian Eriksen has been an clear success so far, with Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela, Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, and Vlad Chiriches yet to fully convince for various reasons.

Luis Suarez left Liverpool to join Barcelona for around £75 million, and the Reds have brought in six players already in this transfer window – Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can, Lazar Markovic, Dejan Lovren, and Divock Origi. The club are targeting further signings, and Borussia Dortmund winger Marco Reus has also been linked with a move to Liverpool.

The Anfield outfit finished second in the league last season, and will also have to cope with the additional demands of Champions League football next season, but Rodgers insists that Liverpool’s signings are part of a long-term plan to improve his squad.

He said: “It’s a different club, it’s a different vision that we have here.

“At Liverpool there’s a strategy behind what we’re doing. We were talking a lot last season, right the way through, with the recruitment team. That was one of the objectives for the summer, we had to improve the depth of our squad.

“Clearly we were not strong enough last year, in terms of depth in numbers, and in quality. We always earmarked the summer to bring in a number of players in the hope last season that we would be in the Champions League, and then that would give us the opportunity to challenge on all fronts.”

Rodgers also added that the majority of Liverpool’s signings are young talents with the potential to improve, though he did admit that he see why people have drawn a comparison with Spurs.

“The players that we’re bringing in have clear profiles in terms of where we want them to play, what their role is at present, and we see them as young players that can really develop in the future as well, so I would say that the two are totally different.

“I understand the numbers and how it might look, but the integration and the induction into the group is very smooth because we’ve got a wonderful group of players existing here, and they always make it very easy for players coming in.”

mostly fair points - don't agree with bringing in mostly young talent. Lallana,Lovren and Lambert are hardly spring chickens.

Ouch LOL. His continued success must personally be a slap in the face for Levy.

As I said at the time, letting him slip through our fingers was tough to take - at the time he was my no.1 choice over AVB...

Oh well,...can't blame him for pointing out the differences in the approaches to player acquisition, he sounds like he's getting seriously pissed off at the Spurs comparison.

Yawn. We will see next season won't we.

It will be a dramatic fall from grace if losing Suarez costs them a top 4 position. Brendan Icarus Rodgers.

As I've said on many occassions; last season they had a top PL winning strikeforce working for them and 6th/7th place squad - what Brendon has to create now is a Top 4 strikeforce (which I think he will) and a top 4 squad that can cope with Europe - if any of last seasons top 4 looks vulnerable, it's the bin dippers - but he looks to me to be buying wisely and has a better chance than us of achieving top 4..

I take it back, they've just bought Origi. for like 7 million. why can we not scout and make these purchases. who was the last young striker we scouted and bought? can't think of any over the last 10 years.

Lets have a look at the great Brendan Rodgers buys shall we.....

Borini - £10m .... useless
Joe Allen - £15m ... useless
Assaidi.... £3m ...flopped, loaned and about to be sold. Fail
Nuri Sahin .... hardly played, pointless
Samed Yesil .... Who?
Daniel Sturridge .... well played Tranny banger! Good signing
Coutinho .... Average , but smart
Luis Alberto ..... £7m , what has he done so far?
Iago Aspas .... £7m ... Flopped bigtime
Mignolet..... £9m... Good signing
Kolo Toure ... Woeful
Aly Cissokho .... Pointless loan, makes mistakes
Tiago Ilori ..... £7m.... Nobody knows yet
Sakho..... £15m and has been a right donkey for them.

...Now they've spent £20m on Markovic from Benfica, he will flop.
Lovren.... £20m....
Emre Can.... £10m, pretty good business
Rickie Lambert..... £4m for a one season player
Lallana ...£25m for a 26 yr old , joke
Divock Origi .... Good signing for £10m

..... Where is the plan? He has spunked millions on garbage, even more so than AVB did.

As my Liverpool supporting mate says "Anyone he signs has 70% chance of being a flop"

Brendan Rodgers bought 22 players for £184,380,000

Lol. Yes Rodgers. Just so happens your plan is the same as ours. Over spending on average players

Coutinho is no way average. That guy is going to be competing with Eriksen & Lamela as the next big thing.

Really like him as a player. The rest are pretty much in the same category as our signings. A bit meh.

good analysis except I rate Coutinho much higher than that and whilst I think Lallana was a bit dear, he's either in or approaching his prime and proven in the prem. Unlike us spending £26M on Soldado who was leaving it.

It remains to be seen whether these purchases are really any better than ours although having a couple of proven prem players should make the transition easier and a more settled team around the new players should help.

But I'm surprised everyone is so excited about Origi. He scored 6 goals in 35 games last season. Harry Kane did 4 in 11.

Suarez is going to be a big big loss for them.

They may be improving their squad depth which can be utilized better than ours could last season, but unless he gets them playing in a completely different fashion, they are going to feel it a lot more than us next season.

They got where they were on the goals scored front and Suarez was pivotal in that, more so than Bale was for us. He really did two players job in creating and finishing and they haven't got someone to replace his contribution in either of those fields. Let alone find someone to do both.

Add to that the extra games and the amount of effort they are going to put into that and they will have a nasty shock.

That is unless Rogers sets them up completely different. Add in the park the bus effect that winning brings and it wont be the full on conclusion that some think it is.

I agree. Suarez was the maestro AND the lead violinist.

Losing the BITE in his team will make a big difference and as people have pointed out, he's not the best purchaser of players. I DO think he is a bit average as a manager and they will be somewhat toothless especially with CL games to play as well. Cant wait for them to flop.

The Weekly Blast From The Past veers from the normal path of recycling the recycled. In an attempt to resurrect Perth from the poster ether the editorial board decided to take a run at the most arrogant little shit roaming the halls of the world's football clubs at the moment. Rather than the crows coming home to roost are we watching the shiny white incisors eating crow. Or, like many we take a run at, will he end up laughing last.

Whatever happens, the picture of the season will come from the photographer who snaps Brendan's mug the moment he realizes he has missed out on CL for next season. Cover of Life material it will be.
