Any other geeks fancy watching the Tesla Rocket Launch tonight?

Biggest rocket launch since the 70's apparently.

THAT WAS FCUKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those boosters landing!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is when I can crow. Watched it from my driveway! I live about 35 miles away. I’ve seen literally 100s of launches but nothing compares to the shuttle. Whilst today’s was an engineering feat, as a launch spectacle it wasn’t the best. There was an evening one about a month ago which was absolutely stunningly spectacular. I even saw the booster kick into flames before landing. Also the one that blew up a year or so ago I heard and felt it and my first thought was that it was an earthquake. Must admit I do enjoy living in this part of the world

I am a geek.

Visiting florida a couple of years ago, doing the theme parks etc by far my most favourite day was visiting the Kennedy Space Centre.
Awesome.

For anyone who missed it I highly recommend you take a look. I wouldn't consider myself a space geek... owned a telescope when i was a kid but never really took it any further than that, but i though that launch and booster landing yesterday was awesome, and VERY well filmed too.

Well worth a watch if you have 20 mins spare today.

You can skip the first half of the video (unless you're really interested. The actual launch starts about half way through, but keep watching as the booster landing is the best bit.

For this experimental and uncertain mission, however, he decided on a much smaller and whimsical payload - his old cherry-red Tesla sports car.

A space-suited mannequin was strapped in the driver's seat, and the radio set to play a David Bowie soundtrack on a loop.

The Tesla and its passenger have been despatched into an elliptical orbit around the Sun that reaches out as far as the Planet Mars.

the lower segments of the rocket - returned to Earth to attempt controlled landings.

Two came back to touchdown zones on the Florida coast just south of Kennedy. Their landing legs made contact with the ground virtually at the same time.

"That was epic," said Mr Musk. "That's probably the most exciting thing I've ever seen, literally."

The third booster was due to settle on a drone ship stationed several hundred kilometres out at sea. Unfortunately, it had insufficient propellant left to slow the descent, missed the target vessel and was destroyed as it hit the water at some 500km/h.

Mildly interesting , but for the life of me I just can't see what sending a rocket with a car in it into space is going to achieve.

Aren't we content with polluting the oceans enough ?

The car was just a gimmick.

This was a test flight to prove the technology of low cost rocket launches (low cost due to the reusable rockets) and that he can get into Mars orbit. His vision is to colonize Mars to lower our risk of extinction.

Usually on a test flight they would just use blocks of steel or concrete to simulate the payload, but he's a bit of a nutter and though that was boring so put his own car in there playing David Bowie on loop.

It's going to put a car into space!

Why didn't America elect Elon Musk?

That really is something. Well done, Elon.
