Rochdale

At the start of March were joint bottom of L1 and to all intents and purposes 10pts adrift from safety. What a great effort to avoid the drop to league 2.

Shame , I was looking forward to Rochdale assuming their default position in division 4.

In the last decade Dale have out performed the Imps by some margin, that needs a little bit of respect given their potential support and demographic. Spotland is the away ground I have visited the most, hopefully the two clubs will be reaquianted in the league next season.

Although Rochdale does have a much bigger population than people may think - 108,000 in the town itself and 210,000 in the borough.

Yes, but Bury, Oldham, Blackburn, and the the two Manc clubs are all closer to Rochdale than Lincoln is to Scunthorpe and the Cods. Rochdale has a large Asian population that if they have interest in sport it would be cricket rather than football.

In 1975-76, when Rochdale finished 15th in Div.4, their average gate was 1,594. Only Southport and Workington had fewer. The average for Div.4 that year was 3,731.

Just to put our younger readers in the picture:

Rochdale played 36 consecutive seasons in the Football League's bottom division from 1974 to 2010, the longest time any team has been in the bottom division of the League, with some even derisively calling it "the Rochdale Division". The club has the lowest average position of all the clubs which have existed continuously in the Football League since its expansion to four divisions in 1921–22 (76th) and since its expansion to 92 clubs in 1950–51 (79th). Additionally, the club holds the distinction of having played the most seasons in the English Football League without either reaching the top two tiers (89 seasons through 2016–17) or being relegated to the National League.

During its history, the club has had three promotions.

Just saying

Believe you me, I was wishing we were as consistent as them when we got relegated in 2011.

They had games in hand at one point, I think. FA Cup but a few home games called off.

Once they got the pitch sorted, I thought they'd be ok. Probably a little closer than they'd have liked, though!
