Rival fans poke fun as United advertise Derby Day trains to Manchester for London-based supporters

A full-page advert in United's match programme on Saturday advertises a special Derby Day train service from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly

It's the age-old gag guaranteed to wind-up Manchester United fans – supporters who live in London.

Now an advert printed in the club's latest matchday programme appears likely to fuel the mockery even further.

The full-page advert, by Thomas Cook, advertises a special Derby Day train service from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly.

The return charter service costs £45 in standard class and £75 in first class for the April 8 showdown at Old Trafford.

The advert – which offers the train service to Manchester United supporters only – appeared in the copy of the club's programme United Review for the home tie against Reading on Saturday, which United won 1-0.

Thomas Cook advertises itself as the club's official travel partner and prints a telephone number for anyone wanting to book a seat on the Monday night service.

United fans have borne the brunt of light-hearted jokes for years that more fans live in the south than in Manchester.

And the ad has provoked a storm of reaction on Twitter and Manchester United fans' forums - with rival supporters taking the chance to poke fun.

United boast more than 200 officially-recognised branches of the Manchester United Supporters Club in 24 different countries.

A supporters branch in London was formed in 1975.

Both the club and the Manchester United Supporters Trust were unavailable for comment on the ad.
