John McNamee, former Newcastle centre half died today aged 83. Supporters of a certain age will remember him as a player who took no prisoners and had run-ins with Dougan and famously Jack Charlton when both players had each other by the throat. From my recollections the main one is at Roker Park, late December 67, after Xmas when I was in the Fulwell End along with thousands of other Mags when Big John scored and celebrated by swinging on the crossbar. That memory is the reason for my user name. Sleep tight big man.

He was before my time but I found out a lot about our history back in the day so knew of him and was one of those players that I didnt get to appreciate in the flesh but wish I had. The same as the likes of Jackie Milburn, Hughie Gallacher and co.
