His wife Susan Schneider, issued a statement after the tragic news.

'I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief.
'As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.'
His family also issued this statement on the tragic passing of the Oscar winner.
'Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late,' Mara Buxbaum, press representative, said in a statement.
'This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.'

I am gutted. Can't believe it. I hope he is at peace now.

So many of his films were part of my childhood. Mrs Doubtfire, Flubber, Jumanji, Toys, Hook, Aladdain, and my absolute favourite, Jack.

And Mork and Mindy! Nanu, nanu!

Really sad. Great performer. He had a very human aspect to his acting that just kept your attention. Extraordinary ability to connect with your imagination. 'Dead Poets', the John Wayne impressions, Good Morning Vietnam' etc, Brilliant! You never knew what he was going to come out with next which kept you waiting with baited breath. That irreverent humour that would take advantage of any situation just kept you guessing, yet I never felt he crossed the line totally that other comedians felt they needed to cross. Out of that comes a great respect for the guy and showed just HOW sensitive a person he was.

Apparently he was also a very kind person with a great record in charity work.

Great pity, big loss. Awwwww.

One of the most incredible comedic minds I have ever witnessed in action. I would go out of my way to watch him. A real loss.

Sad, and even sadder that they're saying this was suicide. I'm almost hoping that it was some sex act that went wrong...

Loved watching him, a real sad premature loss.

You just don't want it to be on purpose. I hate the thought of anyone feeling that low that they think the best option is to kill themselves.

His publicist is saying that he was seriously depressed, so tragically it sounds like he meant to do it - what a waste of a great life.

Yep, heartbreaking. Some say it's selfish. I disagree, it's the furthest thing from it. They think they are a burdon, and are doing their loved ones a favour by removing that burdon - themselves. It's just gutting for everyone involved.

Some of my favourite RW moments were when he was being interviewed on a talk show and he just went off for 5 minutes non stop. Completely ad lib and the thread of the dialogue would cover just about everything under the sun. Genius.

He also had a talent for taking you from gut wrenching laughter to tears of sadness and back again in about 30 seconds. I really will miss him.

The Mail Online says, 'He was also reportedly dealing with 'serious money troubles' after racking up $30million in divorce bills. The Oscar-winner had completed a stint in rehab in Minnesota weeks before his suicide'. Robin Williams was having 'serious money troubles' and was left wracked with depression after his CBS show, The Crazy Ones was axed in May. Williams was said to be in financial dire straits after divorces from his two ex-wives Valerie Velardi and Marsha Garces, both pictured, cost him $30 million. In 2013 he said he needed to sell his $35m Napa ranch (bottom left) because he couldn't afford it anymore. It is still on the market for $29.9m. Of his expensive divorces, he said: 'I used to joke they were going to call it "all the money" but they changed it to "alimony". It's ripping your heart out through your wallet. Last month, checked into rehab to 'fine-tune' amid a high-profile battle with alcohol and drug addiction'.

Sounds like a huge pile of pressure. It always strikes me that decent people take it to heart to owe money etc. Nothing is worth taking your life for though. He must have suffered awful depression with all those things weighing on him.

Even sadder that he looks like it was money that threw him over the edge...

When you have real talent you can always find a way back from financial disasters - but I guess no one was showing him how..

Still stunned he took this way out really.

and what exactly had his ex wives done to deserve $30 million of his money? sweet f*** all I imagine. I hope they are happy.

Robin Williams’s grieving daughter has been forced to quit Twitter and Instagram after online trolls bullied and taunted her over her father’s suicide.
Zelda Williams, 25, said she was “shaking” after she was sent a mortuary photograph said to show her father’s body, which was actually a picture taken several years ago of another man who died from asphyxiation and bore a passing resemblance to the actor.

You have to be sick to do this to that poor woman.

is troll culture going to be what everyone remembers the internet for in 10, 20 years time?

posting "fake" information as truth, name calling just because "you can"?

maybe all this spying on us isn't such a bad idea. being able to commit cyber abuse affects individuals in just the same way as verbal abuse. needs to stop.

I was thinking similarly. It's strange how that an intelligent person (and he was certainly that) opts to take their life rather than use their intelligence to find a way out of their situation. I know depression is not always rational but when the mind is such a brilliant organ, I always think, 'why didn't they work out a strategy to alleviate their situation?' It just takes a quiet moment of reflection and then a period to think out the plan of action. Even if there isn't one apparent, ask someone how to sort it. Seek advice.

Sad and wrong to end this way.

Didn't even know he suffered from server depression. Most of the geniuses do, sadly.

Very sad.

RIP RW.

People that troll like that should just be assassinated.
