RIP Cyrille Regis - A True Midlands Footballing Icon

Sad and surprising news to hear of big Cyrille's passing.

Still what a life he enjoyed living the dream and becoming a very good footballer not only at club level but also playing for England.

Thoughts of condolence go out to his family and friends.

I remember being at an away game at Highfield Road. It was winter and had been snowing and piles of snow were at the front of the terracing.

Cyrille was one on one with I think Jimmy Rimmer and looked a certainty to score when we all pelted him with snowballs and he missed the ball.

I also remember the banana incident and was in that corner.

We always gave Cyrille some stick but only because he was so good and frightened us to death that he would hammer a few past us.

RIP Cyrille, let Ugo and Dalian know that they are forever in our thoughts.

Tragic news.

My memories of Cyrille were not massively villa related. Being dragged to the Hawthorns in the early 80's by my Dad and brother meant I saw him quite a few times in that era of his career. He was a legend to my Dad and brother and one of the first players i remember trying to recreate a goal in the park. That goal v Norwich. Wow!!

Think it speaks volumes for the man that you only have to look across football for the tributes coming in from players/fans alike.

Thoughts are most certainly with his family.

Absolutely shocking and saddening news.

From a football point of view I always said of the big man that if this is how good he is at the age of 33, I would have loved to have seen him in a Villa shirt when he was 23 !!!! - he was a great player for us in them few years.

As a man, it has all been said, a true gent, and an ambassador for the Midlands.

Really am sad about this one, I hope the Villa do something more than the usual for him.

RIP Big Man

Glad I am going Saturday as I'm sure the club will give him a good send off.
Sleep well Big Fella

Some lovely tributes to Cyril and although he's passed on at such a young age by God he's had an impact on so many people's lives and from the stories such a positive one. :1: :1: :1: :1:

Great article by Rob the Lord Bishop on the official site. Was so close to getting it for Vital lol

I think what speaks volumes about this man is that he played for no fewer than four midlands clubs, rivals. Yet there was never any animosity that I can remember, only respect. He came into the game when monkey chants and blatant racism from the terraces was rampant, yet he oozed class and was a trailblazer for black footballers. Rest In Peace Big Cyrille.

Aston Villa have confirmed that the club will be holding a minute's applause for former striker and all round good bloke Cyrille Regis ahead of our game against Barnsley...

Found the minute's applause to Cyrille very emotional. After Ugo and Dalian, it seems far too regular an occurrence.

RIP big man :14:
