RIO, Should it be happening?

More disturbing reports about the RIO venue for the Olympic Games are adding to the already questionable choice for the Games.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm all in favour of countries picking up their image and upscaling their facilities to host the Olympics. It's good, I personally I believe, for the countries involved. It opens up attitudes to the various countries, gives them new status, which many of them need, increases dialogue, which can't be bad, it also lets in the press to take a look at a country's image and comment on it and does a lot on many occasions for the freedom and personal liberties of the people of the country concerned.

But new revelations, previously not made public are emerging where all sorts of 'pollution' is being experienced are putting the games at risk, to my mind.

A report says:
"Welcome to Rio, don't mind the dead bodies: Bloated CORPSE floats in bay where Olympic swimmers and sailors will compete - as athletes are warned to 'keep their mouths closed' because water is full of 'human crap'

Competitors are told to keep their mouths shut because of pollution in Rio as waters are still badly contaminated. Marathon swimmers will 'literally be swimming in human crap' Dr. Daniel Becker warned.

Australian sailors Olympic preparations are being hampered as rubbish pollutes water they practice in Guanabara Bay is site of windsurfing and sailing events, while Copacabana Beach hosts marathon swimming."

NOW OK, this is the Daily Mail but before you turn to another article, there are photos....

IF you want to see the images, take a look....

SHOULD THE OLYMPICS CONTINUE? Already the ZIKA virus spread by mosquitoes has already stopped many teams, golf players and the like from attending Rio, which means the Olympics is not a complete games with many disciplines omitted, so SHOULD IT BE DECLARED INVALID? AND why is nobody asking this question? Corruption? Things being swept under the carpet for the sake of ??????? Something smells, as well as what is floating in the water.

To add to that, I've just read that each athlete has been given a can of high strength insect repellant. Also that Spain's Olympic Team chief has said that the athlete's village is in a 'critical' condition saying many apartments are uninhabitable and flooding. The Australians refused to move into the village because of exposed wiring and leaking sewage pipes.
The Spanish chief encountered plumbing, electrical and cleaning problems. The mix of electrical and water problems is not good. The British team have engaged the services of a plumber for the duration of the games but they say that their apartments are in a better condition than those of competing nations. UNFAIR? You judge.

It would leave Brazil in a real bad position to cancel anything at this stage, not to mention the athlete's disappointment and would ruin their careers even for many of them but the Olympics are a MAJOR world event in so many lives, the athletes, trainers, countries athletic associations, their forward planning etc etc, the list is huge of those involved, not to mention the massive outlay for broadcasting associations around the world. BUT the Olympics should be equal in the way they operate for all athletes, to keep the playing field even and all things fair. I cannot see how this can be the case at these games.

Maybe the international Olympic association should move in and take control of the situation, employ their own 'fixers' and send the bill to the Brazilian government.

Due to the sheer size and nature of the event, there are always seemingly insurmountable problems associated with it, all the way up to the opening ceremony.
Many more extreme and infinitely worse examples of this have been seen in the past. From the terrorism in Munich'72 to the Civil Rights protests in the USA in 68 to Hitlers Nazi propaganda machinations and subsequent concerns of Human Rights issues, in the Berlin games of 1936.
They all went ahead and so will this one.

I'm sure you're right that it will happen 'Man on' but I just hope no one gets seriously ill by going to Rio and I hope the field is levelled more for the athletes.

The whole thing seems ill thought out (or if it WAS well surveyed, someone covered up the problems) and where is the clean up needed and to what extent will it reach in terms of clearing the garbage from the bays etc?

I'm with you on this but purely on a personal level. A close friend was planning on going to Brazil, not for the games but sometime after. He's changed his mind and is playing it safe. I would probably do the same.

I was watching a report about the water pollution. I was cringing thinking about the rowers and water thrashing about creating airborne mist/spray and the athletes breathing it in. I dread to think where they're holding the Triathlon. Keep yer heads out of the water lads and lasses!

In Cardiff Bay where they placed the barrage across the 2 rivers, they pumped air into the water to help oxygenate it.

Can Brazil afford to host another worlwide extravaganza 2 years after they did it for everyone with a World Cup in 2014 ?
Not according to the Public Sector workers, some who haven't been paid.

A bloated, drugged up irrelevance in the real world of sport, who wants it ?
