Real Junk Food Project: The Leeds cafe that has fed 10,000 people, using 20 tonnes of unwanted food – and started a worldwide movement

.........................................................................

The founder of a quietly-growing empire of social cafes has called on a change in the law to prevent the UK’s "criminal" levels of food waste - especially by supermarkets - while so many go hungry.

Adam Smith, founder of The Real Junk Food Project, in Armley, Leeds, feeds his punters on goods that would otherwise have been thrown away by supermarkets, independent grocers and food banks.

The 29-year-old trained chef cooks up stews, casseroles, soups and cakes with the unwanted food, charging a “pay as you feel” policy - allowing punters to pay what they feel they can, and if that is nothing, they can help with the washing up.

In just 10 months he has fed 10,000 people on 20 tonnes of unwanted food, raising over £30,000

Too right, as it should be. I remember when I was Saturday lad at Safeway they used to give the 'waste' to the local homeless shelter and sometimes a tramp who used to come and ask.

It was then stopped for health and safety.

Aye, much better to let these folks starve to death innit!?

The sell by dates are often way too cautious, it is amazing, if people know what they are doing, what can be eaten once some of us think it has gone off.

Brilliant idea and project, the less waste and more help the better.

I gave a tramp my caviare once..

Only to hold whilst I did my laces up. I then got it back, kicked shite out of him and all was well in the world again.

Time for a sleep I think! :3:

I once sat in the graveyard and drank lager with a homeless bloke. Turns out he was ex Royal Marines, he said stuff that clarified it. I felt sorry for him and offered him my garage to sleep in. He turned it down and said he was wandering towards Louth

Louth?

Hell of a lot of the homeless are ex military apparently

National disgrace for sure.

.

Most foods don't have a sell by date either, they have a best before date, meaning that the product may not be at its best after that date. Ok so many people might not want to buy the product but it certainly should not be thrown away.
