Rate The Players v Portsmouth

Scotimp

Vital Football Legend
Tonight we found out that we do not possess quite as complete a squad as we thought. In consolation, we had some key players missing and there cannot be many teams better than Portsmouth in League One. Sixteen games in sixty days is one hell of a schedule, and it showed tonight. However, we now have ten days until the next league match, a good opportunity to rest some key players and allow others to recover. Congratulations Portsmouth, you were very good. Onwards!

6.0 is the par score, use half-marks and give us your comments too.

Deadline is 5pm on Thursday.

Palmer: 6.5 Made some good saves but I thought he could have had the second and possibly the third.
Gotts: 4 Looked exactly what he was - a young midfielder playing out of position at right-back against a very good side. Not his fault at all, he will have better games against lesser opposition and in his correct position.
Eyoma: 6 We missed him at right-back. Can we clone him?
Jackson: 7 Our only experienced defender against a very good side, but caught out for the second.
Roughan: 5.5 Very hard night, a couple of good passes.
Grant: 6 Closed down immediately he got the ball.
McGrandles: 5 Completely overwhelmed in midfield. Not his type of game.
Jones: 6 Similar to McGrandles, but also got forward well at times.
Johnson: 6.5 Tried to run at them, but two shots straight at the keeper.
Scully: 6.5 Did well when he got the ball and also tried to cause them problems by running at them.
Hopper: 5.5 Anonymous until he scored, a direct contrast to million-pound Marquis. In Raggett's pocket for the other 89 minutes.
Anderson: 7 Looked much better when he came on, can you be man of the match in that time?

Gotts 4 Out of his depth at full back against Pompy.
Eyoma 6 Did well
Jackson 5 At fault for the first goal and done by the second although no pressure on the delivery in. (Thommo get some glasses)
Roughan 5 Did well not to drown.
Grant 5 Disappointing when it really matters. Grow a pair.
McGrandles 6 Improved as it went on.
Jones 7 Effort and energy in a losing performance
Johnson 6 Petulant diver\moaner meets silky footballer (which one will he be?)
Scully 6.5 Extra half for bloody effort.
Hopper 6.5 Did well at times in a losing performance

Not the ideal opposition to meet when several key players are injured, some of our youngsters will be better for the experience.
Palmer - 7 - generally sound though possibly could have done better during the defensive meltdown early in the second half.
Gotts- 5 - a hard introduction to the first team. Struggled at right back against opposition good enough and savvy enough to target him. Next time will hopefully be easier - and in midfield?
Eyoma -5.5 - struggled in a real test as CB but will learn from it.
Jackson - 7 - held the sinking ship of an inexperienced defence together.
Roughan - 6 - stood up well against a very good winger, will be a better player for the test of character.
Grant - 5.5 - effectively targeted by Pompey to strangle much of our creativity at source.
McGrandles - 6 - provided impetus to get us in the game first half, faded second.
Jones 6.5 - battling warrior but part of a swamped and out thought midfield.
Johnson - 6 - frustrating - well marshalled, occasionally by being fouled though too prone to fall over; and too inclined to be running head down.
Scully- 6.5 - hard working, not a winger, showed his strength, can take a ball to feet with back to goal. Better when Harry on.
Hopper 6.5 - second successive battle with good strong centre backs. Needed the goal.

Anderson 7 - made a difference, great cross for Hopper's goal.

Palmer 7 Kept the score down.

Gotts 5 Baptism of fire and one he'll want to forget
Eyoma 5.5 Barely won a header and didn't get tight enough on the 1st goal
Jackson 6 Best of the back four but misjudged the ball for the second goal
Roughan 6 Most of their best attacks were the opposite side and he did his job fine. One excellent cross

Grant 5.5 Ineffective. Closed down all game and showed some frustration towards the end
McGrandles 6 Couple of sublime through balls but ran out of steam
Jones 6 Lots of effort but couldn't quite get going

Johnson 6 Couple of very good runs but some examples of being too greedy in shooting from distance when another player was better placed
Scully 6 Worked his socks off with little reward
Hopper 6.5 Hard working as usual. Nice that he got his goal

Anderson 7 Made a difference to how we played. Splendid cross for our consolation.

Palmer 6.5 probably would have been more without (not sure about the 3rd though)
Gotts 4.5 tough debut and not a good game to be dropped in really. Reminded me of Alex Bradley against Liverpool - didn't look like a fullback, wasn't strong enough etc... some nice touches on the ball but was given the run around really.
Eyoma 5.5 out of position for first goal. Not great in the air. Good recovery speed couple of times
Jackson 5.5 yeah some good blocks and clearances, but showed their best player inside for the first goal, then misjudged the ball and lost Marquis for the second too.
Roughan 5 few good tackles but poor on ball
Grant 5.5 they sussed us out a bit by not letting Grant have any time. We didn't seem to have an answer to that or find a way of getting him on the ball
McGrandles 5 pretty anonymous - took his pressing out of the game and then never got on the ball or made things happen really
Jones 5 same
Johnson 6 Wasteful in good areas but the only person likely to really make it happen
Scully 6 endeavour, but felt like the best you got from him was winning the odd corner and stuff never anything particularly dangerous in the final third
Hopper 6 got his goal and was a thankless task really when we couldn't progress ball into their final third

Anderson 6.5 as good as you could expect from a cameo at right back with the game gone. Good assist

Palmer. 6.5. Couple of good saves
Gotts. 4. Looked out of his depth like a boy playing in a mans game. He must be better than that to be highly rated at Leeds So time will tell.
Eyoma. 5. Looked nervous and scatty
Jackson. 6. A couple of pretty vital mistakes but it looked a one man defence at times.
Roughan. 4.5. They pressured him and he wilted by constantly giving the ball away. Tough night and one to learn from.
Grant. 6. Always under pressure but to his credit he didnt hide and kept looking for the ball.
McGrandles 5. Pretty anonymous, worked hard but when you’re chasing the game the much talked about unnoticed parts of his game go unnoticed.
Jones. 4.5. Least influential game so far, never really got into it.
Scully 5.5. Huffed and puffed and provided the only defence splitting Pass.
Hopper 6. Lived off scraps for service but scored which made it respectable.
Johnson. 5. Glimpses of quality but not a good night.

Anderson 6.5. Immediately improved things and did more than most in his 30 minutes

Palmer 7.5: Made two or three excellent saves after the break and helped keep the score down to a respectable level.
Gotts 5: Not the best game to make his debut in, given the opposition were so strong. Looked okay for the first few minutes, but then was distinctly average after that.
Eyoma 6: Thought he could have done better for their first goal, but then got in a good interception on Marquis to deny him a second. Did okay
Jackson 6.5: A little shaky at times, but performed okay and tried to bring the ball out of defence a few times, in a rather haphazard fashion.
Roughan 5: Resembled a kid playing men's football. Some days he looks great, others he looks out of his depth, like here. Gives away possession far too easily.
Grant 6.5: Tried to make things happen, but was playing too deep to have any real effect on the match.
McGrandles 5.5: Seen him play a few times and still not sure what he brings to the side. Grant has creativity, Jones has determination in bundles, but Conor? Jury's still out for me.
Jones 6: Not as effect as other games, but still put in a good shift.
Johnson 6.5: Some decent moments where he looked likely to really hurt Pompey, but a tad too greedy at times. Began dropping real deep to get the ball, but it wasn't quite his night.
Scully 5.5: I thought Scully could be our next big-money transfer out of the club a year ago as he looked to have great promise. Now struggling to earn a regular place in the side and on this evidence, you can see why. Not involved enough.
Hopper 6.5: Deserved his goal for taking a bit of a battering and didn't get much change out of Raggett and that Danish kid, but not for the want of trying.

Anderson 7: So much better than Gotts down the right and City significantly improved when he came on. Great cross for Hopper's goal.

Palmer 8 Excellent saves
Gotts 4.0 No physical presence - which will be less of an issue in midfield but nevertheless still an issue at this stage of his career. Will have better night's in Lincoln shirt.
Eyoma 6.0 Better as right back at present but steady enough.
Jackson 7.5 Stood strong when needed
Roughan 6.5 Easily better of young fullbacks playing out of position
Jones 6.5 Battled
McGrandles 6.5 Tried hard
Grant 5.5 Not his type of game.
Johnson 6.5 Took up some strange positions but occasionally threatening
Scully 6.5 One sublime pass (he reminds me of the head down Anderson of a year or two ago) good attitude and will improve
Hopper 7.0 Battled hard and a goal

Anderson 7.5 Made an difference
