Rashford (n/g)

Not wanting to get overly excited, but he really is beginning to look one hell of a player. What a hit.
Doesnt look anywhere near as good for man u. Mourinho seems to be taking all the creativity from him, however Southgate in his interview suggested he had just told rashford to enjoy himself which you could imagine mourinho doesnt do.

Rashford. Screamer. Will be a star at the World Cup and a subject bid of 100m from Barcelona or Real Madrid, mark me woids.

Agree with all the above (well, 100m is a bit strong ?). The new England is, and I never thought I'd use this sentence, a bit more progressive and attacking than Utd. I'm starting to get the impression that most of the England squad enjoy playing for their country now whereas in recent history it almost seemed like an inconvenience.
As I said on an earlier post, these players appear to be being played in positions that suit them instead of being shoe horned in place just because they are a "must pick" big name.

I said that to tge Mrs last night, Nobby. There's no square pegs in round holes, and Southgate hasn't mucked around with different formations. It seems, at last, as if we have a manger with a clear and coherent vision. I have really taken to him. Fingers crossed they make a good account of themselves. All I want is for them to play well, even if we don't make it out of the group. Great to see that we have a couple of wing backs that can put in a decent cross from a dead ball (Trippier and Arnold)

We'll be knocked out first game after the league stage, we all know that!
I bet SL was watching the game last night, so we've saved on scouting Rashford. There'll be a tap on Scally's door first thing this morning.,.. *Taps side of nose, pretending having inside information*

Southgate certainly seems to be getting the best out of what he has at a time when the sheer nature of the Premier League limits the amount of players available to him.

Unlikely as it seems I think he is better off not having any world class individuals. As Nobby said, previous managers have always felt the need to shoe horn players in. As good as Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes were with the ball, none of them were effective when the opposition had the ball (Scholes' tackling was abysmal), which meant we also had to shoe horn in an overworked defensive midfield player like Parker.

This team at least looks capable of beating the inferior teams before an honourable exit to Germany, Brazil or Spain.

Unfortunately, I have a horrible premonition about the interpretation of VAR system playing a part in our demise. Petulance of the likes of Beckham and Rooney has killed us before and could do so again.

Agreed Mehmet . I'm sure we will at least give it a go which in itself will be an improvement on the last few tournaments. I was less than inspired when Southgate was made manager but the way he has handled himself and the team and the style of play he is promoting have really won me over. I can't imagine we'd feel this positive if Big Sam was still in charge.
Bluenose makes a valid point about Lampard Scholes and Gerrard. Any one of them would have got into most international sides individually but some England managers tried, at the detriment of the team, to squeeze them into the same midfield with Beckham. As Bluenose says, all of them brilliant with the ball but not the same without it. This midfield is much more organised with specialists in most positions.
I totally agree that winning it is still some way off for us but I'm not sure our exit will be as early as LSB2 predicts. The teams that are likely to await us in the last 16 round offer nothing to be particularly scared of then it's anyone's game in a one off match. I still and always fancy The Germans but with Southgate seemingly adopting their system of bringing young players through together, the future at least looks a bit brighter.

“I don’t always pick the best players you know. I have a system and I look for players to fit that pattern.”

Alf Ramsey.

That's what we need now from Southgate.

Was anyone else thinking about Ty Gooden's goal against Arsenal when that went in? Obviously it was on the other foot, but a very similar strike.

Lets hope Tunisia and Panama are as pony as Costa Rica.

We have a lot of decent players but still think we are very easy to play against if you can stop the threat from wide areas. Not Southgate's fault we lack any central playmakers..hope players like Foden can make the step up for the next tournament but certainly won't if he stays at City.

Alle-fuckin-luya to that Det.

Either pick the people to fit the system you want, or change the system to fit the people you can get.

What's bothered me over the last couple of World Cups in particular is the "World Cup" adverts that have appeared featuring players BEFORE the squad has been announced!

Almost as if the advertisers are picking the team.

Which could indicate that players are included due to the amount of money paid to the football authorities.

But that's a quite ridiculous idea as I'm sure we all realise.

Agree with a lot of comments above.

Rashford is looking dangerous and as others have said, clearly enjoying playing under GS and for England.

Got my flight sorted for the Belgium game and will be staying out there as long as England are still in it, so fingers crossed we'll play without the fear that's hamstrung us in previous tournaments now that we've got a more attacking but still disciplined style of play with players in their natural positions, and we'll make it to the quarters.

Even though Russia could well be a dangerous place to be, it'll be my luck that the one tournament I don't go to we'll smash it.

Look out for a Gillingham flag chaps! I'll be proudly displaying mine given the opportunity.
I took one to the euros last time out, but burnt a hole in it so had to bin it lol. Determined not to ruin this one!

I don't think he'll start a match in the World Cup, or score a goal. Obviously a very good player though

Rashford is a good player but can be a little greedy - he always looks to shoot himself when near the box, which is fine if he scores, but not if a simple pass could play someone in a better position.

Nice one, I’m quite jealous, but would have no desire to visit Russia other than for the football. Look forward to your posts after the England games!

I'm really struggling to work up any enthusiasm for this world cup. I barely recognise any of the players in the squad.
But after reading all your posts I'm starting to take a bit more interest. I'm not for bothered about winning the bloody thing I just want to watch an England game and think Christ they played well at the end of it.
