They're **cking desparate.

Trouble is, Nike knows Ronaldo will sell shirts wherever he goes, so the global mega corporation might just end up propping up the creaking rags.

Let's get Ronaldo! Man United start talks with Nike over funding for return of Madrid megastar (and Rooney STAYS, says Fergie)

Sir Alex Ferguson promised Wayne Rooney will not be sold as Manchester United prepared an attempt to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

United manager Ferguson came out fighting in response to suggestions Rooney, 27, could be on his way out this summer.

Despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain — who believe they have been given encouragement over a £24million deal — Ferguson said: 'There’s absolutely no issue between Wayne Rooney and me. He will be here next year.'

t is understood United officials have discussed a deal to bring Ronaldo back at a meeting with kit manufacturers Nike on Friday.

They discussed extending their sponsorship deal but also on the agenda was the subject of funding a bid to sign Real Madrid’s Ronaldo, who they sold to the Spanish club in 2009.

Ferguson has played down talk of a return for the forward and it remains unlikely, but it is understood the finer details of financing a move will be considered today at the meeting in London.

Ferguson said during his Friday press conference: '[Rooney] will be here next year. You can have my word on that.

If they sold him for £80m, what do they expect to buy him for? Do they think Madrid will just let him leave on a free transfer? I highly doubt that's the case...

No, they've no rights to the player's registration meaning they make no profit. This is the loophole that everyone will use now because of FFP.

Who sponsors Madrid now ? I would have thought Nike seem to be behind most of the big clubs whether the boots or the shirts or just advertising hoardings. What would be the benefit to them of funding such a huge transfer and moving Ronaldo from Madrid to the 'rags' ?

Just read on the internet that Nike sponsor Ronaldo already to wear their boots.

What does it matter to them whether he kicks a football with their boots in Madrid or in some place just outside Manchester ?

All good questions CB that I can't answer but I was told by an accountant friend of mine ( who just happens to look after the books of one of football's biggest agents ) when the FFP was mooted that these player sponsorship deals would be the way clubs could afford to pay the big wages to players because there's nothing to prevent it under the FFP rules.

I say this again, why would Madrid let him leave? Unless they got double what they paid for him, he's going nowhere. If Messi is rumored to have a £200m buyout clause in his contract, what do you think Ronaldo's is?

Nike also just spent a rumored $200m on Rory McIlroy, and he's currently tearing up the PGA warm-up events as speak (that's sarcasm - he's missed two cuts in a row and is in danger of finishing well out of sight this weekend) and might be a little wary of huge sponsorship deals going forward. It worked with Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, but they are arguably the best athletes to ever play in their respective sports.

The rags will probably attempt to bully Nike into supporting this deal by threatening to not renew their sponsorship deal or demanding stupid money.

I hope it blows up in their face.
