RAF Scampton closing!

100 year anniversary of the RAF and this decision is made!!!

A really sad move this. I hope that some kind of petition is made to try and prevent this one. This base is part of the history of this country irrespective of its current use by the Red Arrows and is one that should be ring fenced by the MOD

........and before anyone shouts off topic...........yes it may be but this is important...........

Nothing surprises anymore - very sad - made by a government that launches 2 multi-million pound aircraft carriers without any aircraft - gets rid of the Harriers which the Yanks are using till 2022 - what do you expect?

The Red Arrows have only been there for around 20 years, and they are moving to another location. As for the Dambusters I am sure there will be some sort of permanent memorial at the site for those who wish to visit. As for ring fencing. I hope the money saved from not having a base there gets put to better use.

Well it is as Danny wont be able to stop training and say everytime the Arrows go over thats a proper formation.
( No emojis as its not a funny topic redundancy )

Surely a massive plot for filling in with new houses for lincoln area so not to use our green spaces.

After visiting last years airshow, the place is a bit of a tip!. Nothing being upgraded. They have to save money somewhere and this along with Linton on Ouse has got the chop.
The Sparrows will probably end up somewhere like Wittering that has space. Sad but places like these cannot be maintained on just historic memories

My old dears met at the Scampton dance in the 60’s, and I grew up in an RAF family. In the end it’s only bricks and mortar, the emotional attachment for Lincolnites goes far beyond that - can anyone honestly say they’ve been there and used the facility in any kind of tangible way? I know I haven’t, despite my background. The key will be making sure something worthwhile is put in its place.

Most of the houses were sold off a long time ago, as my mate had one.
Still sad though, hopefully it can turned into a museum to the dambusters to compliment the IBCC at Canwick.
Be the crown jewels next...

I remember them being there in the 1980's so they must have been there at least 30 years.

They moved in in the eighties and then went to Cranwell before coming back. Hopefully they will move over to Waddo. Plenty of room and a nice new runway. Would still be able to use the airspace too. Wonder what will happen to the site. Would need nice to preserve some of it.

More houses surely ? Then not on other greenfield sites!

However Wikipedia says that when they moved to Cranwell and trained over Scampton the runway and emergency facilities at the latter had to be maintained, so this may not be feasible.

A mate in the know said LCFC were interested as a site for the new ground. Comes with a runway for when we play in Europe. (if they let us in after Brexit). :clown:

Cannot see them going to Waddo. Not that much hanger space. Plus lots of sneakybeaky secret squirrel stuff goes on there. So they probably wouldn't want all the 'anoracks' hanging about!
