It was because Danny Baker was brilliant at it. He (and especially in tandem with Danny Kelly) never took football seriously. They only focused on the amusing and unusual because these are the things all of us enjoy and remember most about it. Those fans who view it with po-faced seriousness are the most crushing bores.
Like you I hadn't listened to it for years, and not just because I live abroad, because I could get it on satellite or over the net, but I actually heard it this evening while in the car over here. Typically enough, a Man Utd supporter from Bournemouth was on moaning about the Glazers not spending enough money. He claimed that United had made half a billion pounds PROFIT last year and the Glazers were only spending 100 million a year on transfers. He actually said "They're not ploughing the profits back into the business".
Sutton, for it was he, didn't have a clue that half a billion was United's turnover, not profi, and so was completely unable to throw out this risible comment with the contempt it deserved. Then again, no journalist understands anything about money, let alone ex footballers, so I can't blame him alone.
But, BBC, allowing that ludicrous call on the air means you are, as Trump would say, fake news.
