radio lincs 'not really a' phone in

Don’t think I’ll be listening anymore. I Thought Friday night “Hope & Glory” was going to be an in-depth football debate / discussion. I only heard one voice, the whole thing became somewhat tedious about the pro’s & cons of making a prediction. If your’re making a prediction say so and move on - quickly ! All the laughter didn’t help matters. Just my opinion of course.

And to add, the microphone fade in wasn’t great, someone was speaking but could not hear them. I can only assume they were trying to wrestle the mic off someone !

When I head our expert summariser say he wasn't prepared to make a prediction as hed hadn't seen us play yet last season. One would have thought someone who works professionally at this would have made the effort to have done some homework. But then again I guess would have had to pay to get in

okay... actually i think Hortin et al. generally do a very good job. Just the phone in idea isnt great. For example the second caller said he was following the game on twitter... not sure the insights he could provide.

Football phone-in programmes are never less than dreadful, and that is an inherent condition.

Caller: "That was never a penalty."
Host: "So you were at the game?"
Caller: "No."

Because of the mind-numbing length of time I spend in the car for Lincoln matches, I usually listen to 606 on a Saturday on the long journey home (no slight on you, German Imp!). It is never short of breath-takingly appalling, with brainless people phoning in with their ill-considered arguments and prize plonker Robbie Savage being Robbie Savage. I never reach the end of the programme.

In much the same way as the Subaru Impreza appeals to exactly the type of people who should not have them, football phone-in shows appeal to exactly the type of people who should not be on them.

Michael Hortin is extremely good at what he does, and Thommo is an amusing foil. But please abandon any attempt at a phone-in show: no one has ever made it anything other than dreadful listening, and you won't either.

The football phone in was only any good with Danny Baker all others are terrible. They had people texting after the defeat in the league after the Exeter game saying the Cowleys should be sacked!!!
Turned off once as soon as the first caller came on, nuff said.

yeah... the original 606 was a good listen.. dont know if it was because Danny Baker was a really good host, or because it was a novelty or just because i was young. Probably a combination of all three. David Mellor took over from him i think and ive never listened since.

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt.
As Scotimp says, these programmes are generally inhabited by those that should keep quiet.
Goldstein and Cundy do ok on Talksport, mainly because they often take the piss out of the more stupid callers.

The guy they had on (from Hykeham, I think) obviously hadn't been at the game and seemed more interested in discussing Lee Angol's move to Grimsby.

Yes Danny Baker was excellent when he did the original 606 but those days the majority of callers all claim to be life long supporters but usually had something else on and could not make the game that day!!

Lol my daughter texted in from the car on the way back & they were ringing within a minute to see if she would go on air (she wouldn't)

It was because Danny Baker was brilliant at it. He (and especially in tandem with Danny Kelly) never took football seriously. They only focused on the amusing and unusual because these are the things all of us enjoy and remember most about it. Those fans who view it with po-faced seriousness are the most crushing bores.

Like you I hadn't listened to it for years, and not just because I live abroad, because I could get it on satellite or over the net, but I actually heard it this evening while in the car over here. Typically enough, a Man Utd supporter from Bournemouth was on moaning about the Glazers not spending enough money. He claimed that United had made half a billion pounds PROFIT last year and the Glazers were only spending 100 million a year on transfers. He actually said "They're not ploughing the profits back into the business".

Sutton, for it was he, didn't have a clue that half a billion was United's turnover, not profi, and so was completely unable to throw out this risible comment with the contempt it deserved. Then again, no journalist understands anything about money, let alone ex footballers, so I can't blame him alone.

But, BBC, allowing that ludicrous call on the air means you are, as Trump would say, fake news.

I am surprised you did not turn the radio off as soon as you heard Sutton speak. I usually do.

The best phone-in show is on Radio Sheffield (Football Heaven every night from 6-7). You get some right idiotic callers, but the presenters are very good at dealing with them.

Sutton definitely doesn't understand anything about money - he managed to go bankrupt a few years back.
