R.I.P John Robertson

Also i remember Stuart Pearce saying the first time he met Robbo was on the team bus taking them to the airport to fly to a pre season tour somewhere. Robbo turns up just before the bus leaves. All he brings with him is his passport and tooth brush in his back pocket.

Not one bag or case.

He just borrows stuff of everyone the whole trip

Lol. Thats how to travel light

How cool is that?
That is the definition of a legend

I first saw him play in '74 and once saw him miss two penalties in one game (at home to Hull I think?) But Cloughie persevered with him and I saw him score the winning penalty against Liverpool in the League cup final replay. I'm honoured to be able to say that I actually witnessed John Robertson play for Nottingham Forest hundreds of times.

What a player, and what a man.

I bumped into him in the ferry boat in the 90s, he was sat drinking with Gordan Strachan. I had to do a double take. He saw me and my mate sat there gobsmacked, and approached us and asked us if we would like to sit down for a pint with them. They sat regaling stories, and we left 2 hours later worse for wear. A truly lovely bloke.

RIP Robbo

Ill be applauding the man tomorrow

My all-time favourite player.
Cried like I’d lost a loved one yesterday.
I had the privilege to watch him in his prime as my first season ticket was 1976.

A part of me and Forest has died. RIP big man. A player 100% worthy of the legend status.

Francis he scored a goal in Munich
Robbo he got one in Madrid.
Forest went out to conquer Europe
And that’s exactly what we did.

SO WHEN YOU WEAR THE SHIRT
REMEMBER WHAT WE DID

WHEN WE WON IN MUNICH AND MADRID.

X

I love stuff like that . Brilliant.

Watching one of the tribute programmes (BBC Icons of football?), it looked like he made it easier when taking penalties by usually sending the keeper the wrong way.

Not sure if there's a statto out there who could give us the percentages and don't really care, but in any case they all went just inside the post, left or right.

The calmness and self-confidence required to be so deadly from the spot, in the highest-pressure situations (League Cup final replay; Scotland v England at Wembley) speaks volumes.

As I recall, we got quite blasé about his ability to beat defenders: 'Skin 'im Robbo!' was shouted with the near-certainty that he would, so we didn't maybe appreciate quite how special his ability was.

My personal JR moment was walking into the Bell Inn and seeing him sat at the bar with a fag and a pint, reading the paper.

I imagined he was looking at the racing pages, but I have no idea whether he was a betting man or whether I'm invoking working-class stereotypes.

I was far too in awe to approach him and say how much I enjoyed watching him play for Forest.

Good though it is that the Pavilion Road End latterly Bridgford End is to become the John Robertson Stand, it is sad that John Robertson never knew this.

I often think of Clough's comment, "why do people send flowers when someone dies? If you like me, send them when I'm alive!"

I suppose though that since the stand may soon be knocked down for redevelopment, at least he would not be around to see that smashing up happen! Though, from all accounts, he would have thought that was funny.
