Pubs

Just watching beeb news and it says that 26 pubs are closing every week. :10:

Shocking statistics. It's such a sad state of affairs.

The government need to support the local pubs more and turn them into social venues for the community again. All they have to do is tax the supermarkets more appropriately and reduce the amount pubs have to pay for the privilege of selling each pint - we're becoming a nation of binge drinkers at home and it's not good. People don't meet and socialise with people in their community any more.

As a matter of interest, a pint of Stones was 99p when I were a lad!

How much was it when you paid for your first pint and what was it?

I think mine would have been a pint of Newcastle Brown bought for me when I was much too young to drink - it would have been around 2/- (is that ten pence now??!)

Someone has to try and sort the pubs out - lots of people losing their jobs in the licencing trade isn't there. Strangely enough I was in our local having a meal when I got back from my hols the other night and there was a man taking some sort of test so he could be a relief barman - how times have changed! Both my children worked in pubs when they were at college and I can't recall either having to take a test!

And I think Wetherspoons have a lot to do with the closing of pubs too - we have four in Rotherham that I'm aware of and three of those are in the town centre. With them charging cheap prices I don't see how the other pubs can compete.

I live in a Derbyshire village. There were at least 20 pubs open when we moved here, all busy. I've just thought about it, and I can now only think of three open. Shame that, cos it was a get-together as well, wasn't it.

I don't drink, half a bottle of brandy, early 60's. Ill the next day, hangover the day after. Never had an alcoholic drink since. So the good things re pubs for me is, I can get a cup of tea, now they all sell food!!!
