The visit to Mullaghmore by Prince Charles will be a poignant and emotional moment for him as he looks over on the scene where his great uncle was murdered by the IRA.
The Royal Family was devastated when in August 1979, Earl Mountbatten of Burma was killed when a bomb secreted stashed aboard his boat blew up off the coast of the small fishing village in the Republic of Ireland.

Where the bastards responsible ever brought to justice?

Think they caught one guy by chance but he died a few years later and the other fella was released due to Good Friday Agreement...

IRA defined it as an act of war... Can't remember who it is and cant be bothered googling it but one of the Sinn Fein members (who the Queen met and shook hands with) was IRA Commander or something at the time as well...

Seeing the picture of Charles shaking hands with Gerry Adams was, to me, just a little bit stomach-churning.

Probably that bastard McGuiness then.....

I worship the ground that's due to him........

It's just a publicity stunt to try to raise his profile with the kids after writing all those letters about spiders. He should have picked a black rapper though. Macklemore isn't even that cool.

What choice did he have? Adams asked for the meeting if HRH had refused he would had been vilified. Only shows that Charles if by far the bigger man than the worm who's had he shook.

Respect to Prince Charles for doing it, couldn't have been an easy thing for him to do, given how close he was to Earl Mountbatten.

I just hope it ay too windy,,,cos Charles will take off with them earholes, and he will be gone with the wind

I'm not blaming HRH here, Skeggy. As you say, he has to play the game. I've never been a fan of GA.

He could had taken his Fathers lead who blatantly refused McGuiness's extended hand.

Is it a game, or is there a genuine touch of conciliation?

I'd like to hope so, GT, but I have no time whatsoever for the Shinners.
Skeggy, I never knew that Phil did not accept the proffered paw!

Interesting article in today's IRISH INDEPENDENT

'And I shall have some peace there for peace comes dropping slow.' More than 35 years after his beloved great-uncle was assassinated on holiday in Ireland, precisely the right notes of reconciliation, regret and, above all, empathy were struck by Prince Charles as he quoted that familiar line from WB Yeats.

They do say time is a great healer and after the sadness that has gone on both sides in our contries it is nice to hope we can move on and pay respects to those who was lost and ensure we don't have to see these things happen again, i really don't understand what all the trouble was over in the first place tbh with the IRA and our contry i should read up tbh

Fucking hell Clive... Well if you do read both sides of the story because you'll see some view them as Freedom Fighters and not Terrorists... I suppose it isnt something you'd be as well versed in as myself... Britain is a massive part of Irish history 800 years or more where Britain has many other elements to its history of which the North and Ireland arent so big...

Out of curiosity CDX, where did you learn about it? My mrs is from the south, and I was initially surprised that she knew so little, and to find it wasn't taught in schools down there.

Looking at it though, I suppose the reasons why it wasn't are pretty obvious.
