Premier League Match Thread: Newcastle United Vs Nottingham Forest, sponsored by memories of better times (six weeks ago)

Not a fucking ounce of irony. Our discipline has gone to shit. We've had 4 yellow cards in a game twice, and 3 in another, inside 7 games.

There's absolutely no point citing how many shots we've had, because we aren't scoring them. Clearly we're not creating good chances, because we're conceding goals more than twice as fast as we're scoring them. In the premier league were conceding goals 9 times faster than we're scoring them.

We shouldn't have won against Mitjyland. Other than the open play goal we didn't create a thing. We didn't threaten at all, other than being offside twice which funnily enough, doesn't count for anything.

Here's a graphic Pope shared earlier. This should show just how bad we are, and it's not down to a little bit of misfortune.

So you think us having 4 yellow cards today and Newcastle none is a fair reflection of the game?

I would disagree.

When I think about this game, I don't think 'fine margins' I think we were beaten by the better team because they were better and any other result would have felt unfair on Newcastle.
And Newcastle weren't even very good.
They were better second half but Sels made a couple of great saves.

Other than that, it's 0-0 without two big decisions that go against us.

Looked it up - Dwight Gayle was the one who got a 2 match ban after diving to win a penalty against us.

Tonali should get similar, but that was in the plebs' league. No doubt there are reasons why it doesn't apply in the EPL.

Freddie didn't learn not to act like Maradona in dangerous areas! He's just not Maradona! He thinks he's more technical than he is! We should have taken 60 million! That's it!

What is becoming clear, and probably masked last season because of our defensive solidity along with Wood having a stonker, is we don't have goals in midfield.
Yesterday's match had MGW, Ando and Yates who got 9 goals between them last season. Play Sangaré and it doesn't move the dial.
We are massively reliant on Wood and wingers cutting in. How easy is this to defend against?
Our recruitment in the summer added Luis which [should] improve us, but when he's not around we don't score.

Yes totally agree with this point, posted the same thing last week. I watched Caicedo ping one top corner for Chelsea against Liverpool. Rice scored for Arsenal. Grealish for Everton, Bruno Guimaraes pinged it in against us…

It’s actually embarrasing how contributions few our midfielders provide, but what’s more embarrasing is how none of them know how to hit a ball - Anderson as bad as MGW in front of goal. Both terrible. Sangare the same. Our wingers don’t do nearly enough either.

I think it’s a real concern because there’s zero variety in how we score and unless you walk it in, we don’t score.

100%

How many times have we defended well, been well in a game, only for a midfielder to blast one from outside the box and we lose the game?

West Ham, Arsenal and Newcastle are just three examples this season.

Whereas when we are hammering against the parked bus, we have to get every pass absolutely spot on because a goal is only going to come from a winger, a striker or a set piece.

Anderson and MGW are the same with their shots (add Yates and Sangare to that)- if it has power, it flies over the bar. If it is on target, it's a daisy cutter that your grandma could save.

They must be working on this on the training ground surely, as it's a critical weakness in all of their games- but it isn't getting better

Chaps I loved Ange’s last presser . We should give the man a chance with the best 11. If he hasn’t turned it round by end of November international break then time for a new guy. I know that won’t go down that well but the man is right about the media and wider society .

COYR . We can do this (but have the next guy lined up if not)

Guys as at present I doubt that even Brian Clough and Peter Taylor at their best could change things around on two weeks.
Today's performance wasn't a performance that deserves the sacking of the coach.
Let's for a moment remove the Ange out mantra from " our" minds, Looking back at the game I saw some very good performances today.
The central defence ( Milo Cuhna and Morata), in my opinion did well. No goals conceded from set pieces, and almost won all balls coming into box.
Williams was MOM. The Italian fella did well and the first half he even ghosted/ dummied a Newcastle player with class.
I think today it was the midfield that let us a bit down ( plus Wood).
It seems we cannot manage a five star performance from all players.
Anderson was great in all the other games, today not that much.
MGW, slowly is turning into s show pony that we cannot afford.
Ngoye is getting better. Different type of winger them Elanga but is improving. Remember, from all the new players he was an ever starter both for Nuno and Ange, so the boy must be good.
A worry is Wood.
Following last season ,it's like we owe him and no matter what we just keep starting with him ( most of the time).
His missing chances that might be game changers.
I am sure that if it wasn't for his achievements last season, he will end up more on the bench then on the pitch. Meaning more playing time for Jesus.
CHO used to find the bottom corner once every three games, now not even close.
I keep asking how this can change?
It's becoming more a mental issue then a coaching one.

So we are saying that our midfield is lacking what is needed at premier league level ie not good enough? I 100% agree with you. The names currently occupying the midfield positions demonstrate that.

MGW , yates and Anderson have no composure infront of goal at all. you just know its going miles over every time that they get it. lampard was so good at getting to the edge of the box and scoring. our lads dont even hit the target.

CHO gets in good positions but often fails to assist or score.

We'll be top of the post-match presser table in no time!

Bottom of the football table though.

In fairness Sangare had a decent record for goals before joining Forest and is even on the board for having recorded one of the fastest shots.

Luiz also has a decent record but he needs to be on the pitch…

So because he’s usually brilliant he’s beyond criticism?

I give him all the credit in the world but he was really poor today when we needed him to be strong and stand up
I didn't say he was beyond criticism.

The guy has been running through brick walls for us for the last few games, just because he gave away a penalty doesn't mean he was really poor for the whole game.

To suggest he was reluctant to be physical because he didn’t want to against his old colleagues or get the crowd on his back is ridiculous imo.

But lets not forget we dont judge CDMs for goals

They are to stop opposition, link defence to midfield. If they can create a goal its a bonus. Let alone score a goal

We rarely get goals them from our attacking midfielders as it is

See Rangers have taken decisive action & got rid of the clown they mistakenly employed was hoping when I looked at headlines this morning that EM might have done the same as there are so many similarities between Martin & Ange they are both stubborn, arrogant and expect a brand of football that has failed spectacularly at other clubs to work with their new club with the inevitable outcome.

I know Ange did try to change things on Sunday his problem is though IMO he’s several games too late & he’s dealing with players that probably didn’t want him in the first place & certainly don’t want him now.

Players aren’t stupid & talk to other players at other clubs so would be well aware as to what was likely to happen. I’m not saying they aren’t trying for him but at the same time I don’t think they are completely committed.

Players like MGW, Williams, & CHO signed new contracts while Nuno who they clearly liked & respected was manager & then all of a sudden the plug is pulled & in comes a manager who they can see isn’t up to it, & isn’t going to bring the success that they hoped for when they signed their new contracts

Nuno had been found out.

Nuno had been found out.
Maybe but it still looked to me as if the players believed in him & were trying to evolve a slightly different approach under him. Now they are being asked to adopt a completely different approach under a coach they don’t believe in
