Something very special happened over the last week. Yes, we won at Anfield, which is incredibly special. But something else- the media started to respect us, for the first time really in over 2 years in the Premier League.

A whole bunch of talking heads, who had all predicted us to either struggle or be relegated (often through wishful thinking about Ipswich and Leicester), started taking notice that we, to quote a notable previous manager, "are a good side".

It's a respect we have not had before and has had to be hard earned. It will be easily lost. Momentum is everything. We are unbeaten in the PL, but from mostly quite comfortable fixtures. If we can remain unbeaten from 5 including Liverpool and Brighton away, then it points to some massive progress.

Brighton are an inoffensive club. I don't think anyone begrudges their success. I've seen us play them in three different divisions and I don't think I've ever had anything but kind words for their fans or their club. I'd like us to beat them of course, but as a club they are one I would wish all the best to.

I would say Brighton are a better side than the Whoscored stats say- although whoscored's team of the week had not a single Forest player in it, so there we go.

They are an attacking possession side. Under Hurzeler they are all about fluidity in possession, midfield control and seamlessly linking the build up. They are aggressive in defence, pressing and disrupting opposition build up play.

Brighton Formation

Generally a 4-2-3-1, although at home to Ipswich they set up a 4-4-2- which didn't really work. I would expect the above.

However, this is fluid. In build up they transition to a kind of 4-2-4 and at times a 4-3-3 with a single pivot and two number 8s. This creates a kind of attacking triangle and overloads.

However, they can be susceptible to the counter in these positions; catch them on the turnover and with wingbacks so far forward you could be attacking essentially a 2-5-3 formation and catching them out.

Brighton have spent a very large amount of money this summer- one of the highest in Europe, after several seasons of huge net profits. Consequently there are some new and emerging faces.

Up front they have a few choices.

Danny Welbeck is one of the most successful and ensuring low-scoring strikers in PL history, with 16 seasons of single digit goal returns to his name. Not trying to provoke a Popism here, but everytime I've seen him I thought he was poor.

They also have Evan Ferguson who is NOT poor- but isn't playing much. Only 19, he had a purple patch last season that unfortunately included an outstanding strike at the CG. I thought he was the real deal, but that was one of only 15 games he started.

Another who scored in their win at our place last year was João Pedro, £35m from Watford. He can play up front or in the attacking midfield and is... Really good. But because he is positioned in the attacking midfield he isn't a big scorer- I think he got two against us and only 9 for the season.

New £40m signing from Leeds Georginio Rutter could be in ACM. Not one I really get to be honest. His stats were good but not breathtaking for the championship. They see something in him I guess.

We didn't see Kaoru Mitoma last season at the CG, but we managed to keep him quiet the season before. He is outstanding quality on the left wing, so tricky and intelligent. But injuries limited him to 15 starts and 7 goal contributions last season in the PL. At 27 he is a lot older than I thought as well.

New signing Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle looks fantastic on the right wing. Taking advantage of Newcastle's PSR problems, they got him and we got Anderson. Our deal was a lot cheaper with a crap goalkeeper going the other way, and I love Anderson. But Minteh is not one Newcastle wanted to lose, even though he has only one assist so far.

They have lost Pascal Groß, which is massive in DCM as he really ran the show against us last year. As a replacement they signed Mats Weiffer for £25m from Feyenoord. He has been one of their best players so far, being excellent in the air and in almost all aspects of defence.

Next to him is James Milner who is close to approaching old Testament kinds of ages (maybe that's an exaggeration but he does turn 39 this season). Milner is just... Milner.

At the back it's the usual. Lewis Dunk who should have had his testimonial a couple of seasons ago. Jan Paul van Hecke who is a great passing and aerial defender.

Estupinan has hardly played so may still have injuries, which is great- as he is outstanding. In which case it's Veltman who is ok with a young 19 year old Jack Hinshelwood having deputised all season on the left.

Here are the players

Form

Same points as us, probably from harder games. They easily beat Everton away; I thought they were extremely lucky to beat Man Utd. Amazing draw at Arsenal, disappointing one to Ipswich.

Head to Head

Extended to show how we have played these in three different divisions with pretty even success between us- they did the double last season (and didn't deserve to), and kept beating us when they were challenging for promotion

Who's the ****** in the black?

King ****** today - Rob Jones, Scouser, absolute tool who sent Boly off against Bournemouth for being stamped on, couldn't decide if a handball was in the area or not and consequently engineered a 3-2 home defeat defeat

Screenshot_20240921_113643_Samsung Internet.jpg

His record for us before that though is pretty good. Reffed our first PL home against West Ham, was called to the screen to view a penalty for them and didn't give it. Disallowed Burnley's goal at home last year too.

VAR is Peter Bankes, another Scouser not allowed to ref Liverpool or Everton

Chris Sutton respects us now:

"It is hard to predict a defeat for Nottingham Forest now because they were so good at Liverpool and their backline of Nikola Milenkovic, Murillo, Alex Moreno and Ola Aina were just tremendous.

Forest also had James Ward-Prowse just sitting in front of their back four ticking things over and Ryan Yates alongside him getting on everyone's nerves with his tenacity.

Their substitutes came on and impacted the game at Anfield as well and the whole team had such composure.

So, while I look at Brighton and think they are capable of scoring, based on what I saw from Forest, why would I say they will lose?

I don't think Brighton will lose at home either, so I am really sorry, but I am going to have to go for another draw."

Sutton's prediction: 1-1

Personally despite Brighton being one of the better teams in the league now I would be really disappointed if we don't get a draw at least

Would be nice to keep the unbeaten run going

This fan clearly classes us as a relegation level team still

"I'm being optimistic and saying 1-0, despite knowing deep down it's likely to be a repeat of last weekend, plus Burnley, Sheff U and Everton from last season."

I really don’t think a lot of other teams fans realise our midfield is now the three double barrelled JWP, MGW & CHO then Alanga and Anderson Yates etc

Plus Wood is dismissed by almost everyone despite all the stats that mean people should be taking notice

Brighton’s owner has taken a £200m gamble this season. They have brought in some very good players but also a couple of head scratchers. Dunk, Milner, Welbeck… They still rely pretty heavily on these players but surely they will need to replace them come the end of this season. It does mean that they will probably need a sale or two.

Either way I think we are one of a collection of clubs looking to emulate their model which is understandable.

As for the game, I am going for 1-1. This is a game that could easily go either way but I think we will get something from it.

Over 3 years now they are absolutely fine. And next season too.

In a couple of seasons that £200m spend will be on the books without the huge sales in years to come supporting it.

New rules coming in though so maybe that will be fine

Tough one to predict, particularly as we set the bar so high with last weeks performance. Would be happy with draw and keep the unbeaten run going though. Another win on the road (our 5th on the bounce) and people would really start to sit up and take notice.

They have also thrown some bigger fees out which gives a diminished return. This year and next they are fine based on a three year model but the year after that could be tight.

Given how they have been run I don’t think they will have too much of an issue but it’s very much a change of tack.

agree. we were already strong in midfield and then added jwp and Anderson. think they are going to do to the seagull munchers what they did to liverpoo.

thing is we now have a back line as good as the midfield and Chris woods to boot.

the only thing that concerns me is they are lighting fast. I reckon them being at home helps us cos they will need and want to play that high line and we can. watch them out.

doubt any of us would be unhappy with a point but it's a real opportunity for us to cement our start and keep that confidence rolling. a win would leave us scratching around for someone to blame and want out, not to mention badly damaging our very hard earned reputation for being shit.

it's what happens when you sell all your best players. if you want to do more than mid table then it's a tricky balance. that's why it's good news we are trying for new contracts for mgw aina etc.

Every chance of leapfrogging arsenal this weekend.

Liverpool have a tricky home fixture against Bournemouth so a point might be enough to go ahead of them. 😂

@Thewolf/jimmygordon Let's talk Murillo

imo he's looking a different player this season alongside Milenkovic. Its not just the covering defending which I maintain he's always been good at. I think having that presence next to him is really bolstering his game.
Not only that, but I reckon having Moreno the other side, who is so aggressive and so quick will improve his game even more.
From what we've seen from the first five games, can you see a quality CB in there yet?

Don't want to jinx him

But not put a foot wrong so far

It's been notable he's playing within himself and not going forward much at all

He is however passing the ball very well mostly on the ground into feet and helping us so much moving forward in that respect

And hasn't been noticeably caught out for important headers

I really like the way him and Sels take goal kicks together as well

So far he's been great

That's not what I saw last season or even pre season (which really had me concerned lessons hadn't been learnt by him or the club)

And like I say he's focusing on defending this season and so far (as a team) we are conceding a fraction of the goals we did last season

Long may this continue!

Great to watch so far

Can’t shift this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that we will do a proper Forest today & put in a real after the Lord Mayors show performance

I dont think Nuno will let them

I also think the desire for success within the squad is pretty high

Hope I am right

At the end of the day Brighton are a good team though so we could even play well and get nothing if luck isn't on our side

I was never much of a fan of him stepping into midfield anyway. Some teams press too effectively for that to be a safe habit.
I do, however, love him pinging those long, accurate 70 yard passes out to the wings. I hope he carries on with that occasionally just because it gives the opposition another problem to worry about.

Just way more effective this season doing what he does in a positive way for the team than last season imo

His distribution is superb. Especially the simpler balls to feet he plays so crisply

So different to how we used to distribute from the back early on in EPL where every pass from our defence went to the opposition pretty much

(Last season his standout stuff was running forward with the ball. 70 yard passes and desperate blocks and clearances in a very vulnerable defence which long term will end in tears regardless. And almost scoring worldie goals for us)

Everything so much more calm and controlled this season. So far at least!

Hopefully we don't need any of the flowery stuff now. Unless we get miles ahead in a game!

And he can just do a much more simpler job to a very high standard every week

Let midfield and attack take the risks. Keep it solid for them behind them so one goal can win us a match. And get the ball to them quickly to their feet mainly. So they have time and space to turn.
