PRE 1978 MEMORIES

Memory plays tricks nowadays but when I first went to Springfield park back in the late 60's Alan Halsall was the keeper and Harry Lyon the striker. Bert LLewelyn was inside right (or left) and I have a vague recollection of Bert being tripped well outside the box and sliding all the way into the net. That was when pitches were mud piles with a flag in each corner.

I remember back in the early 70s we had a night match at Altrincham and Billy Sutherland rung me at about 5pm saying are you going in the car tonight I need a lift. Arriving at the ground Billy, Kenny Morris, Eric Welsby, & Johnny King piled in my car Les Rigby came over to me and said "Get um there in one piece" but not thanks mate lol. Sadly we lost 0-3, can you imagine that today, great days.
The fans mixed with the players in those days, either at work
or before the match at Springy Hotel or after the match in
the Supporters Club.

Meeting the players at Marine, South Liverpool,
South Shields and other Away matches.

Beating Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup in 1977.

I think Jack Charlton was their Manager and
Maurice Whittle scored we was at the back of the goal and
watched the ball flying into their nets,
in front of a crowd of 13,000 plus.

Latics:
Brown, Morris, Hinnigan, Gore, Ward, Gillibrand, Whittle, Worswick, Moore, Whittle, Wright.

Met Harry Lyons daughter at a house party in Carlisle in the early 1980s.
She did not have a good word to say about him.

But then we have recently seen a similar think with Frampton

Dont remember that goalie J Heath: Brian Grundy used to ref our school games
Remember when Alf Craig scored (disallowed) goal against
Tranmere Rovers FA Cup 1966 on a very snowy Springy Park.

Alf scored a goal and the Ref disallowed it, saying that from Alf
hitting the ball the Ref had blown for Full time,
we was robbed that night.

Bloody freezing watching that ball hit the net with the blizzard blowing in my face. No Gortex in 1966.

Led Bradd was early 80s with us Springy ........ though I remember watching him for Stockport against us.
He scored a few goals for us, played 63 scored (25)
we could do with him now!

In a memorable game in the League Cup,
scoring a goal as Wigan shocked Chelsea with a 4–2 win.
