Potted History Of Matlock Town

The three Fenoughty brothers from Dalton who were friends of me and my brothers all played together for Matlock Town. Tom played for Sheffield Utd and Chesterfield and also managed Matlock for several years. Their father Tom had the off licence in Dalton and played for Rotherham United in the 1930s.

Definitely saw Tom Fenoughty (Blades/ Chesterfield) play against the Millers a few times. Not sure about his brothers.
His brothers, Nick and Mick never played at League level although I saw Nick play for Chesterfield in a reserves game at Millmoor. Not sure if it was Juniors, U-18s or what. It was about 1968 or 1969 so Nick would have been 16 or 17.

Just found a copy of the teamsheet for Millers Res .v Chesterfield Res. , N.Midlands League (14/01/69). None of the Fenoughty lads were playing. Ken Tiler (who was the cousin of one of my schoolmates) was playing for Chesterfield Res. though.

Also found teamsheet for N. Midlands Cup game Millers Res. v Chesterfield Res., on 03/09/68. No Fenoughtys, but Neil Warnock, Charlie Bell and Ernie Moss were all playing for the Spireites.

You may be thinking of a Northern Intermediate youth team game?

Definitely not reserves, Mike. My best guess thinking it over is it was Rotherham Boys v Chesterfield Boys. It was definitely a midweek night fixture at Millmoor because several of us from school went to cheer Nick on. He played in a position I would describe as Outside Right. A couple of the Rotherham lads played professionally later. I don't think clubs have Boys teams anymore but they did in the 1960s. RUFC Boys also played our school 1st Eleven around the mid-1960s and won 5 or 6 nil!

Team news... 4-3-3? Is Trialist C an old ex-Miller?

Cann, Trialist A , Agbaire, Adegboyega, Trialist B, Ashley, Jellis, Spence, Tavares, Trialist C, Nemane

35 min Cann almost beaten from 35 yds ... again.

... then Tavares fails to score a one-on-one. Went round the keeper, then missed the net!

HT : Matlock T. 1 Millers 0

I’m at the game. Brandon Williams is trialling at left back. Vassell up front. Also a triallist at right back - big lad, don’t know who he is. We gifted them a goal with a horrendous mistake and have missed two one on ones - Vassell on the first one and Tavares on the second when he put it wide after rounding the keeper. They’re the facts. As for how we are playing, my parents taught me that if you can’t say anything nice it’s best to say nothing, so I’m saying nothing.

Cover, Kaleta, Trialist D and J.Clarke are now on. Wow, that should frighten Matlock!

51min Trialist C (Vassell?) is brought down by the Matlock keeper and then scores from the penalty spot.
1-1

61min Martha, Gardner and Lee are about to come on.

73min Richardson replaces Trialist B.

Finished 1-1

Trialist A was Sonny Aljofree, Trialist B was Brandon Williams,
Triailist C was Kyle Vassell, Trialist D was Jez Davies.
There was also a Trialist E (late sub - unknown)

No Rafferty, Douglas or Duncan (injured?) Here we go again...
Reports that Rafferty was not even at the ground, although Douglas was there.

Current squad is about National League North standard, if that. Mr. Doingawonderuljob should never have dragged us down this far, but he doesn't seem interested in selling up. We're stuck!
