Team news ... 3-5-2? 4-4-2? 4-6-0?

Cann, Rafferty (c), Adeboyega, Agbaire, Cover, Ashley, Jellis, Trialist A, Kaleta, Tavares, Martha
(Trialist A = Jez Davies)

Looks awful - no proper strikers. This is stupid! TS should be ashamed.
Rafferty playing at LB.
A new trialist keeper on bench - Jake Turner, ex-Gillingham (according to 'Tizer website).

23min Tavares puts the Millers ahead!

HT : Alfreton 0 Millers 1

Now on : Trialist B (keeper), Trialist C (RB), Trialist D (LB), Lee, J.Clarke, Gardner, Nemane

60min L.Clarke replaces Cover
74min Wilson replaces Martha
FT : 0-1

Trialist keeper had little to do. Half a squad, no Vassell, players being played of position, some players not playing at all, no proper strikers... the picture isn't really becoming much clearer.
At least we won and it sounded like Tavares played well.

Tavares seems to have been a good acquisition, Mike. I second your point about the picture not becoming any clearer. From social media, forums and conversations with a few Millers so far as I can judge not a single supporter has a clue as to what the aim this season is. There was a mention of a 'competitive' budget back in the day when TS, SM or Uncle Tom Cobley could be rrsed to say anything. I have seen more of a statement of intent from the RU Women's team.
A sort of consensus has developed (not sure where from) and David Rawson espoused it the other day that we're waiting for the mega £millions from the sale of Nombe ( and others?) before signing several quality players. We'll see.

RUFC has (stupidly) made it clear that Nombe will be sold. That definitely will bring down the price. Then not playing him to avoid injury, means he drops off the radar of other clubs. Does anybody even really know if he is injured, has been in full training or what?. If no decent bids come in, do we hang on to him? Unlike us, most other clubs probably won't want to sign a player who has not had a proper "pre-season". We seem to have no idea about managing player contracts, negotiating transfers, etc. Probably will never change with current people in charge.

The trialist keeper is another players released released by a fellow league two outfit. That’s where we are. Perhaps he is excellent and there is some very good reason why he was released and he is a potential steal for us. But the general impression is that we are scratching around in the bargain basement for players. I want to be optimistic but there isn’t much to cling on to at the moment. Tavares looks decent. Jellis looks enthusiastic. That’s about it. Bruce seems to be a relatively safe pair of hands and will want to prove what he can do, but he isn’t going to be a miracle worker. If we are going to do ok this season we are going to need better players than we have at present. At the moment we appear to be signing or considering signing players who might be back ups to the ones we already have that we know aren’t great. It’s a car crash of a pre season so far in my opinion, and I don’t enjoy saying that.

Is this not why Steve McClaren was brought in? Is he still with us? What exactly does he do and how often is he doing it? Is he at Roundwood or the NYS daily or does he pop in once a fortnight for a cup of tea and a chat to give us the benefit of his vast experience? Does anybody know?

If we are relying on the money from Sam Nombe then why isn't he being sold - what's the matter with him? We are in dire need of a striker and, as far as I can see, he is the only striker at the club at the moment. If he doesn't leave then we surely have to start with him in the cup/first league game? If he does leave I hope we have 'names' of strikers wanting to come in.

They have yet to reach the clubs valuation. From what I’m being told there are more than club that is interested in signing Sam Nombe. Sell to the highest bidder although ultimately S.N, will have the choice of his next career move.
MK would be fine because he started out there and Warney knows what he’s getting.
Transfer fees are not usually paid in one full lump sum although as Lindum says it will count to the overall budget limits.
I would expect Sam to be gone by the end of this month. ( July )

EDIT : I wouldn’t hold your breath on any 20 goals a season striker coming in anytime soon. Still think we will access the loan market between now and 1st September.
If we don’t bring a little bit extra quality in then it’s possibly going to be a long season.

I'm not convinced there is a 'highest bidder'. I believe there is just one bidder who isn't giving us what we want but is still dangling a 'purse string' at Nombe.

Could be wrong though.

Only MKD mentioned in the press. They seem to have offered £500K and then a bit more. I would have thought Nombe was worth upwards of £1m to the right team. The thing with SCMP is that if you flog a player for £x you can only spend £1/2x on a replacement (I think) so the Tizer trumpeting the sale of Nombe as key to improving the squad seems disingenuous to me. How low this club has sunk. Hartlepool and Salford seem giants by comparison.

But it says a lot if we are waiting to sell one player and hope to get what we need to buy in two, three or four more.
