Pope Benedict XVI to resign!

Vital Football Legend
Pope Benedict XVI is to resign at the end of this month in an unexpected development, saying he is too old to continue at the age of 85.

He became Pope in 2005 following John Paul II's death.

Resignations from the papacy are not unknown, but this is the first in the modern era, which has been marked by pontiffs dying while in office.

At 78, the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was one of the oldest new popes in history when elected.

The BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome says the news has come "out of the blue", and that there was no speculation whatsoever about the move in recent days.

A Vatican spokesman indicated that even the Pope's closest aides did not know what he was planning to do.

POPE BENEDICT XVI

At 78, one of the oldest new popes in history when elected in 2005
Born in Germany in 1927, joined Hitler Youth during WWII and was conscripted as an anti-aircraft gunner but deserted
As Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger spent 24 years in charge of Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - once known as the Holy Office of the Inquisition
A theological conservative, with uncompromising views on homosexuality and women priests
He took the helm as one of the fiercest storms the Catholic Church has faced in decades - the scandal of child sex abuse by priests - was breaking.

The Vatican says it expects the period between the Pope's resignation and the election of his successor to be as brief as possible, but there has been no confirmation on when cardinals will meet to choose a new pontiff.

In a statement, the pontiff said: "After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.

"I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.

"However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me.

"For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is."

Maybe you don't get to be infallible until you are in your late seventies!

Or maybe your infallibility only gets found out when people start prying up their bishoporic skirts!...A bit like they did when they got the courage to out the Irish priests for what they'd got up to for decades and decades....or the poor girls that spent their lives working for free for 'the church'..

Ok, I know, I'm far too cynical.

Patriarchs are mentalists, who become the heads of their cult, through political 'cloak and dagger' lines, or inbred bloodlines.

Apparently Big Sam isn't going fot the job.

Great picture on this report!

Sinéad weighs in as well ...

Think I might apply... Free house, company car, never have to spend another penny - but the best thing is that you get to chose your own name. 'Pope Dave' sounds cool, 'Pope Goon Slayer I' sounds better, but 'Pope Dan Brown Was Right' has a nice ring to it too....

Apparently he is running off with queen Betrix of the Netherlands who also suddenly and mysteriously resigned....huh think about it.

I suspect she may well be right, if some of the less shall I say supportive claims ever see the light of day her words of wisdom may well be valid.

why the fuck would they have give the job to a 78 year old in the first place?

I'm not Roman Catholic in my faith but I would expect that experience for the top job in their religion is a main consideration. A lot of people seem to think that a young person would bring vitality etc to the position and make the RC church more popular but it's not about that, a younger person often let's vigour run away with them and makes unwelcome statement and has unrefined ideas that can 'rock the boat' of any organisation. It works with government and all sorts of establishments. I don't know how it works with the RC church but I would say that the top job looks at all the churches policies, spitituality, finance, stances on issues and many other things. For a younger guy to take these on is not always recommended or viable. Personally, I think it' hard going for such old men to take the job on. I find that they pick too old a person for it myself but I can understand why, many times.

Maybe it's because I'm not Catholic or religious, but I don't get the big deal about him "retiring"? They'll just pick another man who will say and do and preach the same things that every previous Pope has?

This just makes me think of Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, so my vote goes to Ewan McGregor.

One hasn't retired since the 15th century, so it's rather odd.

I hope the next one wears shades and rides a skateboard.

This one act is a conspiracy theorist's wet dream and a stand up monologue several days long.
